BARTON – Heavy rain on Sunday failed to dampen the fun of the last day of the Orleans County Fair.
In fact, the rain seemed to add to the excitement of the demolition derby as drivers smashed cars while trying to maneuver a muddy, slippery track.
The excitement was heightened by lightning, thunder and a hard rain, but overcast skies only eased weekend’s grilling heat.
In between events, a few individuals rolled around in the mud for cash prizes while hungry fans chowed down on treats sold by area Boy Scouts or purchased from the assortment of vendors at the fair.

LOWELL - The Vermont Agency of Natural Resources has issued permits for the Lowell Wind Project.
The agency announced Friday the release of five environmental permits to Green Mountain Power Inc. for the construction and operation of a wind powered electric generating facility on Lowell Mountain. The project, known as Kingdom Community Wind (KCW), includes the installation of an access road and 21 wind turbines along the ridgeline and upgrade of a related transmission line.

Greg Bean and Jane Horton hold the club champion honors for Orleans Country Club after a two day medal stroke play event. Greg Bean scored a 76-72 for 148. Jane Horton scored 84-83 for 167. Bob Horton took the President's Cup honors with a low net score of 62 on Sunday. Mark Fauteux took the Junior Club Championship with 98-92 for 190.

Therese Diane (Lussier) Heitzman passed away unexpectedly on July 22, 2011 at her home in Maineville, Ohio.
August 17th
BARTON – Several months ago, Lorie Seadale set out on a mission to bring the record of the longest Cadillac parade to this small community, once home of Henry Leland, the inventor of the Cadillac. On Wednesday, the record was not only broken but exceeded the hopes and dreams of many.
The previous record of 102 cars was held by a community in the Netherlands. The new record, set yesterday during the first day of the Orleans County Fair, was 298 cars. Guinness Book of World Records representatives officiated over the successful attempt.
August 16th
DERBY- The Vermont Electric Company (VELCO) sent only two representatives to the Derby Planning Commission meeting Monday evening, even though VELCO was not on the agenda, again. Prior to the meeting, Planning Commission Chairman Joe Profera said that he did not think VELCO officials would be attending this meeting.
