NEWPORT, VT - The North Country Union High School Board met briefly Thursday and touched on several subjects of interest, notably that negotiations for a new teachers' contract had been concluded with attorneys for both sides reviewing the document.
Superintendent Robert Kern said an earlier agreement had been reached but a last second objection over the interpretation of some language in the contract proposal sent the matter back to the negotiating table.
Dr. Kern said the major issue was language regarding early retirement and insurance benefits.
DERBY – State Senator Vince Illuzzi might be out of the political game, at least for now, but apparently he will continue to serve Vermonters.
Illuzzi, who served the people of Orleans and Essex Counties, decided not to seek re-election for the senate but instead ran unsuccessfully against Doug Hoffer for state auditor. Now Illuzzi is considering acting as a lobbyist.
During an interview Sunday, Illuzzi said three organizations offered him a contract to do part-time lobbying. After 32 years of being in the state senate, it would be nice to stay involved in some capacity, he said.
It is no secret that the many of the athletes that adorn the pages of local and statewide newspapers come from team-based sports.
Everyone loves football, soccer, hockey, basketball, baseball etc..., and those sports do help sell papers, mainly due to the sheer volume of players that can be featured from game-to-game.
On any given day, someone new can be the hero.
In individual sports, such as skiing and snowboarding, you can either be the hero or the goat, depending on what kind of day you have.
A few great runs, someone else misses a slalom, and you win.

NEWPORT, VT- Actuaries for the Vermont National Education Association working with the Vermont Education Health Initiative (VEHI) and Blue Cross Blue Shield are recommending a 14% increase in health care costs this next fiscal year. The increase is due in part to implementation of the Federal Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act, popularly knows as “Obama Care.” There are several factors driving the highest rate increase proposal since FY '04, which are outlined in a VEHI letter to the business offices of Orleans Central Supervisory Union and North Country Supervisory Union.
