ThunderBirds Clip Falcons 2-0

October 17, 2012

SWANTON–Going up against 9-2-1 Missisquoi, the North Country field hockey team (3-8-2) gave the Thunderbirds all they could handle in a gritty 2-0 loss.
“It was a great game, cold, but very well played,” said coach Chantelle Bouchard.
Danielle Gabucci shone in the loss, stopping seventeen out of nineteen shots.
“She made a ton of great saves,” said Bouchard. “She was diving to stop the ball, you name it, she did it.”
If the season ended today, the two teams would meet each other in the opening round of the division three play-offs.

Falcons Drop Final Home Match 4-0 to Essex

October 17, 2012

NEWPORT–Essex (5-6-2) scored two goals in each half of the Falcons and Hornets match on Tuesday, defeating North Country (3-9-1) 4-0.
"We need to believe that we belong with the better teams in the state. Today we probably don't for a lot of reasons, but deep down we know we do and that we can compete with any team," said coach James McKenny.
It was a physical first half for both teams, with a total of three yellow cards issued.
Logan Fortier was issued one for pushing a guy who moments earlier trampled him, and Chris Bronson had the other for NCU.

Thibault Decides 2-1 Contest in Double OT

October 17, 2012

ORLEANS-Junior Josh Thibault blasted in a goal off a pileup in front of the Danville net as the Rangers outlasted Danville 2-1 in a contest that took two overtime periods. The scoring play came after a barrage of Ranger shots on the outstanding Indian goalkeeper Kyle Johnson.
The Rangers, celebrating senior day, played the first half without the intensity head coach Tom Evans was looking for.
Evans said afterward, ”We just didn’t work as a team. There was a lot of individual play and I thought Danville took it to us in the first half.”

FOUR ON THE FLOOR

October 16, 2012

NEWPORT CITY – With less than a month until the general election, local politicians are going head to head to represent Vermonters at the State House. Monday evening, Jay Dudley (R), John Rodgers (D), Bob Lewis (R) and incumbent Bob Starr (D) faced off in a senatorial debate at the Eastside Restaurant.
The four candidates are vying for two open seats in the Essex/Orleans District. Despite opposing views, the candidates treated each other with respect.
The Newport Daily Express, The Chronicle, The Orleans County Record, WMOO-FM, NEK-TV and the Northland Journal sponsored the debate.

NEWPORT’S SUPER HEROES

October 16, 2012

NEWPORT CITY – On the morning of Aug. 5, 2004, the phone rang in the Greensboro home of former Vermont State Senator Mike Metcalf. On the other end was the youngest son, Keyes, who was serving in the Middle East. He told his mother that he had been shot in the head. Keyes told his family he wouldn’t have called but the Army made sure he notified his family.
With the exception of a headache and a few stitches, Keyes was okay, a miracle the family credits to his helmet – made by workers at the Revision Military plant in Newport City.

Falcon Boys Dominate Lake Region Relays

October 16, 2012

ORLEANS–The fifty racers at the Lake Region Relays barely missed getting completely drenched as the rain held off while they competed in two-person teams, racing around the LRUHS campus on Monday.
The North Country boys and girls had a fine showing at the event.
Led by the duo of Ross DeLaBruere and Sam Brunnette (1st place, 19:48), the Falcons had four of the top five finishes in the boy-boy division, and race, to take first place overall.

Rochester, UCA Settle for a Water Logged 1-1 Tie

October 16, 2012

NEWPORT–The UCA Lady Crusaders (2-7-3), behind Moriah Lafoe's goal, stayed unbeaten in their fourth straight match, tying Rochester (4-3-1) 1-1 on a rain-soaked mess of a field on Monday afternoon.
Rochester got on the board first when Michaela Sterling knocked one in past Lydia Samaan.
Lafoe tied the contest up when she delivered a long-range shot from near mid-field catching the visiting keeper out of position.
"It was kind of a weird goal and I did not think it was going to go in, but it did and we tied the game," said Lafoe.
