Newportâ€“In girls action, the United Christian Academy Crusaders fell behind early to the Cabot Huskies, by a score of 12-7 at the end of the first and by 20-9 with 2 minutes to go in the half before UCA began to claw back.
A pair of Hannah Piette baskets and a 2 by Whitney Carter cut the score to 20-16 heading into the break.
Lake Region Wins its Regular Season Finale on the Road
Richford â€“ LR took to the road to face the Falcons of Richford Friday night and they walked away with an easy 42-17 victory.
Drew Gallup was the high scorer with 14 points.
After starting the season a dismal 1-8 the Rangers have rebounded to the tune of a 9-2 record to finish the season .500 at 10-10.
The Blue and White look to have locked up the 10 seed in the Division 2 playoffs, with a first round matchup on the road against the #7 seed Montpelier Solons. The official pairings however will be released later today.
NEWPORT CITY â€“ Cleanup crews were busy Friday removing asbestos flooring at the Orleans County District Courthouse. Friday was a regular furlough day for court staff so court was not in session.
The tiles were in the lobby area of the courthouse, Al Simard, district facility manager for Buildings and General Services, said. The lobby is the only place in the building with asbestos tiles.
â€śWeâ€™re going to get the asbestos out of the way because itâ€™s hazardous,â€ť he said. The state will probably replace the flooring with carpeting. â€śThe least expensive thing we can do.â€ť

NEWPORT CITY â€“ Four city residents are facing off at a chance to win one of two seats on the Newport City Council. Incumbents John Wilson and Tim de la Bruere are going up against Mark Guyette and Peter Holden.

De la Bruere is seeking his third two-year seat.Â He likes the council because there are no political lines. Instead, it is five â€śeveryday peopleâ€ť in the city who come together to deal with municipal issues.Â
NEWPORT, VT - The School-Based Enterprise (SBE) at North Country Career Center of Newport, VT, was among 137 school stores in the United States achieving Gold Level Certification (or Gold Level Re-certification) this year and will be recognized at DECAâ€™s International Career Development Conference in Salt Lake City, Utah.
The students who worked on the certification were senior Alisha Duncan, juniors Tyler Paxman and Aidan Smith, assisted by advisors Sue Birchard and Lydia Alexander.
EAST BURKEâ€“The North Country Nordic girls closed out the regular season on a high note, taking first overall at the Lyndon Institute hosted race on the Kingdom Trails of Burke Mountain.
Haley-Jo Tetreault and Lindsay Cotnoir were neck and neck battling for second place, and it was Tetreault who edged out Cotnoir by two seconds, finishing with a time of 22:03.
Senior Erika Fortin's 24:00 was good enough for seventh place, and she was followed by a pair of sophomores, Adele Woodmansee in tenth, and Jane Dandurand in eleventh.
MANSONVILLE, QUE - One of the three active churches in Potton Township was seriously damaged Wednesday morning after a fire broke out in its steeple. Around 8:30 a.m., a passerby happened to notice smoke billowing out of the steeple of the St-Cajetan Catholic Church, which was rebuilt following a fire in 1950. The passerby called the local fire department.
The church is on Principale Street.
DERBY â€“ Youngsters visiting the Orleans County Fair Grounds in Barton this summer will have an opportunity to learn where food comes from thanks to two mini barns built by North Country Career Center Building Trades Students. The class will build two additional ones.
The building trades class, which consists of North Country Union High School and Lake Region Union High School students, meets at the North Country land lab in Derby.
