DERBY – Local businessman Grant Spates is an experienced member of many different boards and now he would like to be a member of the Derby Select Board. Long-time member Karen Jenne has opted to not seek re-election for a three-year seat, leaving an open place.
In a recent interview, Spates was critical of some of Jenne’s actions as a board member. Jenne was an opponent of the proposed industrial-sized wind turbines on two farms in town.
NEWPORT, VT - The MAC Center for the Arts on Main Street in Newport hosted a wine and cheese opening for their latest bi-monthly exhibit, “Snow and Ice,” Friday. Jim McKimm, creative director of the center, described it as “a history of winter sports in the area, which includes Newport, North Troy, and Jay Peak.” The story is told by old photos, stories, skis, and snowshoes contributed by 10 local artists.
As I was watching all of the commercials during this year's Super Bowl, I was thinking there were not that many that completely wowed me. But there were a few that stood out this year, not necessarily because they were really funny, but because they were well put together and delivered a great message.
I sat with a notebook in hand, viewing every single ad, and here is my take on the 2013 commercial spots.
First let's look at the ones that would fall into the serious, think-piece category.
DERBY - Vicky Farrand-Lewis is seeking a three-year seat on the Derby Select Board, a position that has opened up after long-time member Karen Jenne decided to run for the town clerk and treasurer position instead.
Lewis began attending more town meetings and speaking up when the town was discussing the proposal to erect industrial sized turbines on Derby Line farms. Lewis supports a moratorium on future wind developments because she feels more research is needed on their effects on surrounding areas.
NEWPORT CITY – This year's Winter Carnival was all about fireworks and ice.
The Newport Recreation Department sponsored the event that took place in Gardner Park Saturday.
The day started with three teams battling to the finish in the Orleans County Citizen Advocacy Winter Golf Challenge. The team SSMC, which consisted of a foursome from Haverhill, N.H. came in first place. Rusty's Electric came in second place and the team from Passumpsic Savings Bank came in third place.

NEWPORT–After going almost two long months since their last win, the North Country boys basketball team rallied from an eleven point first quarter deficit to defeat the Colchester Lakers 57-52 on Thursday evening.
"This feels great and it has been a long time coming," said NCU coach Brian Bonvechio. "We played these guys to a two point game at Colchester and we thought that we could play with them tonight and we did. We played tough defense and got some great performances out of these young men."
ORLEANS-Strong defense leads to good offense, and with a smothering press combined with some lights out shooting, the Lake Region boys ran all over the Stowe Raiders en-route to a season-high 93-38 win on Friday night.
“It was an all-around great effort out there, one through eleven. We were missing Clint, but everyone played well," said LRU coach James Ingalls. "We just wanted to work out the kinks on defense, as last few games we have been letting up the last few minutes, but they brought the intensity for 32 minutes tonight."
No. Country 3, Middlebury 1
MIDDLEBURY–Trailing 1-0 after one period, the Falcons were able to rally behind two goals from Crystal Moss to earn a big road win over a much improved Tiger team.
"The girls are starting to learn how to bounce back after a tough first period," said NCU coach Claude Paul. "Overall we had a good second and third, really taking over the game in the final period."
Heading into the second down 1-0, Emily Doty hooked up with Moss for the first North Country goal of the game.
The Lake Region boys basketball team defeated Stowe 93-38 while the North Country girls hockey team rallied to win 3-0 against Middlebury. The UCA boys defeated Canaan 61-21 to get a needed bounce-back win. Full details in Monday's Express on 2-4-13.
