A LEGEND IN THE NEK

September 20, 2012

ST. JOHNSBURY, VT - The New York Times calls quintessential 60’s folk music icon Arlo Guthrie, “A superb folk singer” and “a polished raconteur.” Anyone who has ever attended one of Arlo’s concerts can testify to the latter, when he interrupts a song to riff on whatever happens to float into his mind. His digressions are ironic and funny, even goofy. But they always carry Arlo’s trademark passion to illuminate the pressing issues that face our world.

September 20, 2012

NEWPORT, VT - An independent is making the rounds around Vermont and she is claiming that Vermont Public Radio is manipulating the outcome of the election.
Emily Peyton, who was in Newport last week, is running for governor, but not many people know it.
“The major news will depend on poll numbers to cover a candidate, but without coverage, how can the public learn about a candidate to bring up the poll numbers, especially when the poll questions exclude the candidate’s name?” she asks.

Highlanders Halt Falcons Run at Four With 2-1 Win

September 20, 2012

NEWPORT–After getting up 2-0 on goals by Betsy Dooley, the Harwood Highlanders were able to hold of a late surge by the Falcons to secure the 2-1 win in girl's soccer play on Wednesday.
"We were playing a division champ who can possess the ball better than we can, and I told the girls that you can get behind two to nothing and hope to comeback, as it was (we) came pretty close, but you can't give away forty minutes of a lot of 'kick-ball,' not against a possession team like them," said coach Peter Alexander.

Olympians Control Midfield, Rangers in 2-0 Victory

September 20, 2012

ORLEANS-After falling to the Lake Region Ranger girls in Bradford a week ago, Oxbow made the adjustments they needed as they recorded a 2-0 win at Ranger Field. The Olympians connected on a goal in each half and made it stand up with mid-field dominance and a physical attitude. They pinned down high scoring Tyrah Urie holding the lineman to three shots on goal. Coach Brad Urie stated, “We learned a valuble lesson today. I think we may have taken them a little bit for granted and we’re not good enough to just not play our hardest each time out. We will learn from this and be better for it.”

September 19, 2012

NEWPORT CITY – If Almeda Minnie Allen isn’t the oldest person in the Northeast Kingdom, she comes close and for good reason. The Newport Healthcare resident turns 105 today. “I feel pretty good,” said Allen, during an interview Monday.

Defendant Claims Police Misused Taser

September 19, 2012

NEWPORT, VT – A man tased in a Newport City traffic stop is alleging that police overstepped their authority and were unnecessarily rough with him. Fabian Prive said that officers insisted his wife, Laura, was driving while intoxicated while Fabian insisted he was driving.
A heated discussion erupted, said Fabian, during which law enforcement officials pinned him to the ground and, after he was pinned, tased him.
