A record 194 runners & walkers gathered at Irasburg Common on Saturday morning, August 13, to participate in the 5th annual Kingdom Run. Three course records were broken as athletes from France, Canada, Vermont, and ten other states displayed their athletic talents in this competetive, but friendly sports event. Laurel Cole from Jericho, VT smashed the Womenâs 5K-Run with a time of 20:10. Geordie Heller of Putney, VT sailed by the finish line with a new course record in the Menâs 5K-Walk with a time of 35:35.
NEWPORT CITY â A Coventry man got more than he expected from a news reporter who refused to be intimidated by him.
Judge Robert Bent held Cristopher Smith, 26 of Coventry, without bail pending his arrangement Friday, Aug. 12, in Orleans County Court.
Smith is facing a felony charge of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, a felony charge of attempted aggravated sexual assault with a weapon, and a misdemeanor charge of disorderly conduct. Smith, who appeared in court on Thursday, chose not to enter a plea until Friday.
DERBY â A lack of finances has caused officials at Indoor Recreation of Orleans County (IROC) to pull the plug on the system that heats the therapy and lap pools. The therapy pool is closed but the lap pool will remain open, unheated, at least through next Tuesday.
âWeâre trying to decide how much of the pool we can keep open, if any,â said Executive Director Phil White. âWeâre looking to see whether we can get some help with operating costs to keep the therapy pool open. Until we have some solid support for that, we have to assume weâre not going to heat the pools for a while.â
Barra–– Shirley Ann (Proulx), 63, passed away August 6, 2011 after a courageous battle with cancer, surrounded by her family, at Newton Health Care Hospice Center in Newton, MA. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Aug. 13 in St. Joseph Co-Cathedral, Allen St., Burlington with interment to follow in Old Mt. Calvary Cemetery. Visiting hours will be from 7-9 p.m. on Friday, August 12 at the Boucher and Pritchard Funeral Home, 85 N. Winooski Ave., Burlington.

The North Country Heat U14 baseball team will be playing host to six teams in a round robin style baseball tournament this weekend. Games will be played Friday through Sunday at both Gardner Park and North Country Union High School.
The tournament will feature two local teams, the OEC Lightning and the host team the NC Heat, as well as an all-star team from St. Johnsbury, and teams from Granby, Que, Dover, NH, and Middlebury.
There will also be a home run derby on Saturday evening at 5:00.
Swafford–– Clayton E., 60, of North Troy, VT, passed away August 9, 2011 in Newport with his family at his side. Services will be held at the convenience of the family. Derby, VT â IROC announced yesterday that discussions are continuing with the Vermont Economic Development Authority as IROC seeks to refinance, reduce, and restructure its debt. VEDA has determined that IROC needs additional support for VEDA refinancing to be workable.
Phil White, Chairman of the Board at IROC and Executive Director (without pay) made the announcement.
Jeff Twiss, Vice President of Media Service and Alumni Relations for the Boston Celtics, will be the guest speaker at this yearâs Orleans/Northern Essex County Athletic Hall of Fame dinner on August 27th. Twissâ father Bob, an inductee of the Hall two years ago, resides in the area and helped secure his sonâs services for the event.
Jeff graduated from UVM in 1977, and prior to his time with the Celtics was a teacher and three sport coach at Randolph High School.
