Labor Day - That first Monday in September that often heralds the beginning of autumn and the start of school - was established to honor the men and women who created this country and made it great - the American worker.
NEWPORTâJust like many of the other sports teams from North Country, the boys' soccer team also lost a large chunk of their roster to graduation.
Ten players departed the squad with a diploma while one member transferred to another school.
While coach James McKenny has almost a whole new roster to work with, one thing still remains the same; defense.
ORLEANSâTom Evans is back for his thirty-first year of coaching at Lake Region, and when asked what he has not seen in the game of soccer, it was tough for him to find an answer.
What he does know is that he will be fielding a very competitive team in 2012.
"I am very excited about the year," said Evans. "We lost five seniors which was basically our midfield, so we have our work cut out for us, but we've got a good group of returning players and if we can get the mid-field play we should be ok."
ORLEANS â Anyone in the area of Orleans Village may smell fresh baked pizza and other tasty foods and for good reason.
Erik Lawson, owner of the Village Pizza and Sub Station, recently moved his business from the Derby Road to Orleans, almost directly across from the Frontier Animal Society on Route 5. The new place is located on the VAST trail.
Lawson sold the Derby building to Jim Mulkin who, according to Lawson, is going to tear down the existing building and construct a new one that will have a home for Village Pizza and some retail space.Â
NEWPORT, VT - Democrats decided on their Essex-Orleans senatorial candidates in the two-seat district.
Incumbent Robert Starr of North Troy received 978 votes, John Rodgers of Glover received 888 votes and Jim Guyette received 521 votes in Tuesday's primary. Starr and Rodgers will face off against Republicans Bob Lewis of Derby and Jay Dudley of Barton in the November general election.
âWith the light voter turnout, I was happy with the way it went,â said Starr. Only 7 percent of Derby voters showed up at the polls.
NEWPORTâLast year players were hard to come by for the United Christian Academy boys soccer team.
This year they got all the players they could.
There are fourteen boys that range in grade from 8th-12th at UCA and they are all playing for coach Alyssa DeLaBruere this season.
Three eighth graders will make their debut for the team along with some of new international players, who are still stuck in Korea due to sever weather conditions.
