NEWPORT CENTER - Brian and Jennifer Cook decided to upgrade a home brewing operation to commercial status after years of Brian honing his craft since he was in high school. Kingdom Brewing held an open house this past weekend and participated in the Bean and Brew Fest at Jay Peak Resort.
Jennifer explained how beer is made, from taking a couple of hundred pounds of grain and turning into mash. After an hour, the liquid is pumped into a brew kettle and the unwanted by-product is fed to the beef herd.
ORLEANS–Tyrah Urie had three goals and Tori Adams had the other as Lake Region (10-2) cruised to the 4-0 win over Winooski (2-9) on Tuesday afternoon.
While the win was nice, Ranger coach Brad Urie sees a trend forming with his team that has him concerned.
"We play poorly in the first half and then play pretty well in the second," said Urie. "If you look at our scoring, that is what we do. I don't know why we stay in such a funk, but hopefully we fix that before the end of the year."
Much like Urie said, the girls in white got off to a slow start against the Spartans.
DERBY – The new Kingdom Dog Park in Derby is now open. A grand opening celebration was held Saturday.
Despite the rainy weather a large group turned out and nearly 100 dogs enjoyed romping around in their new playground.
Ann Kelley, her husband Bob Kelley, their daughter Ally, and many volunteers have worked on opening the dog park for more than two years.
The Derby Dog Park Committee and many people from all over voted for Derby to win the Pet Safe dog park contest. Derby prevailed in the second round and won $25,000.

NEWPORT, VT - Thinking about donating some of your time to help others, but not sure where? Why not consider the American Red Cross?
The Red Cross needs volunteers to be part of the disaster response team in the Northeast Kingdom. The response team typically responds to fires and floods, bringing food and drinks to the firefighters and helping the victims with shelter, clothes and food.Â
The Red Cross loses 30 to 35 percent of volunteers annually due to personal, conflicting commitments.
THETFORD–With the rain having soaked the course, the fifty-two boys and forty-one girls teams were faced with less than ideal conditions for the 2012 Wood’s Trail Run on Saturday.

NCU finished 18th/52 teams (507 points) on the boys side and 32nd/41 teams (833 points) on the girls side.
