Falcons Knock off T-Birds 61-51

NEWPORT-- The North Country Falcons faced off against the Missisquoi Thunderbirds for the 2nd time in 2 weeks on Friday.
After dropping the first contest, they avenged their loss, walking away with a 61-51 victory, while holding the T-Birds leading scorer Matt St. Amour to 16 points after he had scored 40 in the previous meeting.
Caleb Prue and Tyler Paxman connected early, putting North Country out on top 10-6 midway through the first. The quarter would end in favor of NCU, with Jason Hatin going on a personal 4-0 run to push the score to 14-11.

A Christmas Wish for a Miracle Baby’s Family

ALBANY – Christmas came early for Amy and Eric Dolloff’s family when they and their four children visited several of the Disney theme parks in Orlando, FL, Nov. 8 to Nov. 14.
Make-a-Wish Vermont paid all the expenses of the trip. The family stayed at Give the Kids the World, a special resort for Make-a-Wish families. The family qualified for the trip because their two-year-old son, Gabriel Dolloff, has numerous medical problems including Down syndrome and leukemia. 
The Dolloffs have three other children who range in age from toddler to teenager.

NEWPORT, VT - The Newport Rotary Club placed dozens of wreaths on the graves of veterans buried at the East Main Cemetery last Friday, Dec. 16. Rotarians also placed wreaths at the cemetery on the Lake Road in Newport Center.
The Rotary Club was represented by Rotarian Roger Cartee, Service Officer for the American Legion Frank Ormsbee, Rotarian Jude Smith, American Legion Adjutant and Rotarian Bill Graham and Rotarian Jim Jarvis.

Crawford Road Crash

DERBY - Nathan Corrow of Newport sustained minor injuries when his Ford SUV flipped over off of the Crawford Road in Derby.
The accident occurred around 6 PM Wednesday.
The Derby Line Fire Department responded to the scene and rescued the trapped driver from the vehicle.
According to Fire Chief Craig Ellam, the roads were very icy.

UCA Boys and Girls Both Fall in Doubleheader Against Canaan

CANAAN – The UCA Crusaders took to the road Tuesday night to face off against Canaan, but unfortunately both teams came home emptied handed, with the boys losing 66-48, and the girls falling 69-25.
To the boys game first. After trailing by 22 at half, Coach Tony DelaBruere said his team “came out ready to play in the 2nd half;” and that they, “had a certain game plan and they executed it in the 2nd half.”
United Christian had 3 players score in double figures, led by Paul Samaan’s 22, Dale Martell and Jon DelaBruere each chipped in with 12.

NCU Board Honors Coach Davis

NEWPORT CITY – Even though Bob Davis, North Country Union High School's football coach, announced his resignation last month, the school board didn’t formally approve it until Tuesday evening.
Davis deserves a lot of credit for the work and dedication he gave to the team over the past 29 years, Principal Bill Rivard said. Davis made a difference in the lives of a lot of students.

NCU Board Reviews Draft Budget Hikes

NEWPORT CITY – Board members from the North Country Union High School have started the long process of getting the 2012-2013 budget ready for voters. Voters will be asked to approve the budget on Town Meeting Day in March.
The proposed high school budget is $11,631,675.37, an increase of $293,287.33 over the 2011-2012 budget.
Board Member Peter Moskovites said the plan is to have the members take the proposed budget home, review it and then discuss it at the next full board meeting.

Brighton death blamed on meth

BRIGHTON, VT - Vermont State Police said Tuesday that the October death of a 22-year-old Island Pond woman is being blamed on a methadone overdose. The investigation into the death of Tiffany Wight is continuing, said Maj. Edward Ledo, commander of the criminal division.
Wight's body was found in the upstairs bedroom of her village home at 123 Railroad St. at about 6 p.m. Oct. 31, Detective Sgt. Jake Zorn said at the time. She was found by her live-in boyfriend, Troy Sheltra, after he returned home from work, police said.
