WESTMOREâ€“The Orleans Lions held their annual Horseshoe World Championships this past Saturday.
With sunny skies and temperatures hovering near ninety degrees, the event drew over 300 spectators throughout the day, and featured 80 participants battling for the chance to be labeled the World Champion.
Steve Cutting and Ben Baker were the best of the best at the competition and they took home the first place trophy.
â€śI just go out there to have fun,â€ť said Baker, â€śI donâ€™t expect to win, but it is nice when it happens.â€ť
Gratton–– Alexander Ray, infant child of Raymond Todd and Vicky (Derbyshire) Gratton of Barton, died Saturday, July 16, 2011 at Fletcher Allen Health Care in Burlington. Graveside services will be held on Wednesday, July 20 at 1 p.m. at St. Francis Xavier Cemetery in Winooski. Arrangements are with the LaVigne Funeral Home in Winooski.

NEWPORTâ€“In a match they had to win, the Prouty Beach 2â€™s of the USTA 4.0 Senior Womenâ€™s League came through with a 2-1 win over the White River Junction Volley Dolls on Sunday afternoon.
â€śWell, we did it. We finished with an 8-2 record and have qualified to go to Sectionals in South Hadley, Massachusetts,â€ť said Co-Captain Petey Johnson.
Johnson, along with her doubles partner Ann Oâ€™Brien were up 5-4 in their first set when one of the Volley Dolls succumbed to heat sickness and was forced to withdraw from the match giving the 2â€™s a 1-0 lead.
NEWPORTâ€“The OEC Kings held a fundraiser for former King Buddy Lamothe on Saturday at Gardner Park during their doubleheader against the Vermont Jays. The team, with help from members of the Orleans, Essex, and Caledonia County communities, were able to raise close to fifteen-hundred dollars to help aid Lamothe with the cost of his medical bills.
â€śIt was great to see so many former teammates and families come out and help lend a hand,â€ť said OEC Coach Brian Bonvechio.
Harvie–– Stuart, 88, husband of Ruth and a long time summer resident of Newport, VT, passed away on January 2, 2011. Interment services will be held on Saturday, July 23, at 11 a.m. at the Pine Grove Cemetery in Newport. Arrangements are entrusted to the care of Curtis-Britch-Converse-Rushford Funeral Home, locally family owned and operated.
