Accused Killers Brought To Court

ST. JOHNSBURY, Vt. (AP) — A Vermont snowplow driver who wanted to "get a girl" was accused Wednesday along with his wife of luring a popular prep school teacher from her home by pretending their vehicle had broken down, then beating and strangling her, stripping her body naked and throwing it into the Connecticut River.
Allen Prue, 30, and Patricia Prue, 33, of Waterford, pleaded not guilty to second-degree murder in the death of Melissa Jenkins, whose SUV was found idling along a remote road near her St. Johnsbury home on Sunday with her unharmed 2-year-old inside.

Shamrocks Fall 6-4 to Chicago in Game One at Nationals

FRISCO, TX–The Vermont Shamrocks opened up the Tier II U-16 Girls’ National Championship Tournament with a tough 6-4 loss to the Chicago Bruins.
With members of the team arriving just hours before game time, it is understandable that they may not have had their legs ready for the 7:00 am start time.
The Bruins came out strong, scoring three goals in the first ten minutes, but the Shamrocks got their legs going, and tied the game up at three.

Mud Season Strikes

ORLEANS CO. - Ah, spring! Time for robins, green grass, warmer weather and - mud.
The severity of mud season this year seems to be dependent on where you go. Some motorists are finding themselves up to their hubs in mud and needing tows while others are making the pass with ease.
“We certainly have our share of muddy back roads this season, that’s for sure,” said Charleston Selectman Dean Bennett. However, he wouldn’tgo so far as to say it’s any worse than previous years. “It just came a little earlier.”

Derby Wind Hearing Draws Large Crowd

DERBY – Approximately 100 people turned out for the Public Service Board (PSB) hearing on the proposed Derby Line Wind Farm, held Monday evening at the Derby Elementary School.
Comments were mixed between those who support the project and those who oppose it. But opponents dominated the time and provided much of the testimony. The comment period lasted more than two hours.
Encore Redevelopment of Burlington is seeking two Certificates of Public good from the PSB to build a 400-plus-foot turbine on Grandview Farm and another one at Smugglers Hill Farm.

Arson investigation underway in Albany

ALBANY - Fire destroyed a building on Pitkin Road in Albany Saturday night.
The Albany Fire Department responded to a mobile home fire and found the structure fully engulfed. They were unable to save any portion of the building, which was primarily used for storage and wasn't occupied.
No one was at the property at the time of the fire and no injuries were reported.
Later, investigators determined the fire was intentionally set and it as been ruled an arson.

Woman Alleges Rape at Bar, Accused Held on $25K

NEWPORT CITY – Nicholas Woodard, 21, of Coventry, has been charged with sexual assault following a sexual encounter with a woman in the bathroom of a local bar. The woman, who was described by one witness as being about 50 years of age and whose name was withheld by police, told police that she had been raped by a man named "Chris" at Griff's Pub and that the rape had been video taped by other people in the bar.
Woodard pleaded not guilty to the charge; Judge Robert Bent held Woodard on $25,000 bail Tuesday.

Police Say Body May Be That of Missing St. J. Mom

ST. JOHNSBURY, VT - Police are not confirming that the body of a woman found near the Comerford Dam Road in Barnet belongs to that of missing St. Johnsbury Academy physics teacher and basketball coach Melissa Jenkins until a positive identification can be made. In the meantime, the body has been sent to Burlington for an autopsy.
Although police are calling the death suspicious, they are releasing very few details, Major Ed Ledo said yesterday evening.
