Fr. Shiju Heads to Coney Island

NEWPORT CITY – Two years ago, Fr. Shiju Chittattukkara, S.D.V, left his home in southern India to spread the Catholic word in the United States. His first stop was St. Mary Star of the Sea Catholic Church in Newport. Last Thursday, Chittattukkara left Newport to serve at Our Lady of Solace in Coney Island, N.Y.
Chittattukkara came to Newport as an assistant pastor to Father Michael Reardon. Chittattukkara had been a priest for a year and a half before coming to Newport. This was his first time in the United States. Prior to coming to the Northeast Kingdom, he knew nothing about Newport.

Our beloved mother, wife and grandmother, Ellen Macomber Young, died in her daughters’ arms on February 7, 2012, at the age of 92 in Denver, Colorado. She was born at home in North Troy, Vermont, on December 12, 1919. Her mother knew the doctor was on his way because she heard the sleigh bells.

Troy School Bond Gets Mixed Reaction

NORTH TROY – The Troy School Board held a special meeting Wednesday evening to outline plans to renovate and improve the Troy Elementary School. The board is asking voters to approve a $2,208,000 bond Tuesday, Feb. 21.
"The Troy School was built in 1978 and has had very little done to it in the past 34 years,” states an informational sheet handed out to voters.
The heating system and sprinkler system are in the process of breaking down. The committee would like to replace the dry sprinkler system with a less expensive wet one.

PSB Promises “Due Process” in Derby Wind Project

DERBY - Derby Line Village Clerk Karen Jenne, who also serves on the Derby Select Board, was one of four area residents to go to Montpelier Monday for a prehearing conference on the proposed Derby Line Wind Project.
The Derby Line Trustees and the Village of Derby Center Trustees authorized Jenne to represent each at the hearing. Jenne was also authorized to represent the International Water Company.

Dinner Theater Warms Island Pond

BRIGHTON - The Island Pond Chamber of Commerce proved the third time was a charm with their latest dinner theater fundraiser.
The “free-wheelin’ murder mystery” written and directed by Susan-Lynn Johns took place the last weekend in January at the American Legion. “Murder with a Country Twang” was presented during dinner on Saturday, Jan. 28, to a packed house. On on Sunday, Jan. 29, guests had a choice of desserts to choose from during an afternoon show.
During each show, several door prizes were presented and Director Johns was presented with a gift from the cast.

Area Students Participate In NEK Music Festival

NEWPORT – The Northeast Kingdom Elementary Music Festival was Wednesday night, February 15, at the Newport City Elementary School Gymnasium. Students from local schools took part in the music festival.
The concert started off with the The Honors Band, directed by Emily Piller. The band played songs like "Plaza de Toros," "Londonderry Air," and Bonse Aba."
The concert concluded with the Honors Chorus, directed by Wendell Hughes and accompanied by Carolyn Hillreigel. The children sang songs like "Finding Our Way Back Home," "Starry Night," and "Ain't No Mountain High Enough."

Rangers Thump Marauders 71-44

ORLEANS–It was a complete group performance by the Lake Region boys on Wednesday evening as everybody on the team made an offensive contribution in the Ranger's 71-44 win over Northfield.
Said coach James Ingalls, "It was a great team effort, all the guys worked hard, shared the ball, and that is why we got the W."
"It felt pretty good to go out there and run the plays right," said senior center James Margolla on his team's play against the Marauders.

Falcons Go 0-3 Wednesday on the Road

Rutland Wins 5-3
RUTLAND–The Falcon hockey girls lost their second in a row Wednesday afternoon, falling to Rutland 5-3 in game one of the North Country-Rutland double-header.
“It wasn't a bad game," said coach Paul, "We did some different things with our breakout that worked and our power-play looked the best it has all year."
Rutland had the upper hand all game, starting in the first where they were able to get two past goalie Tara Langmaid.
