NEWPORT CITY â€“ The Albany Fire Departmentâ€™s former treasurer, Jennifer Tollman, entered a plea of guilty Tuesday to a felony charge of embezzling money from the department.
Tollman had agreed to a plea deal for a three-year deferred sentence. However, because of the severity of the charges, Judge Robert Bent decided to consider the agreement and make a decision in three weeks. For now, Tollman is free on conditions.

Going into the game, Coach Chantelle Bouchard understood her team would be facing an uphill battle, and her girls were prepared to make a stand.

On Monday, half of the driver education students from North Country Union High School drove a golf cart through an obstacle course at the American Legion. First the students drove through the course without texting and then again while texting. The students who did not go through the course yesterday will go through it today.
NEWPORT CITY - William Swett, 59, of Brownington, VT, pleaded not guilty Sept. 13 to eleven charges that include one count of felony aggregated first degree domestic assault, four misdemeanor counts of violation of an abuse prevention order, three felony charges of attempted obstruction of justice, and three misdemeanor charges of violating conditions of release.
NEWPORT, VT - Travis Collins, 21, of Derby, plead innocent Monday to charges of second degree felony unlawful restraint and misdemeanor domestic assault after he allegedly attacked and choked his wife, forced her into a car and drove her to their home where police finally caught up with the couple.
NEWPORT CITY â€“ Over the weekend, firefighters from four Northeast Kingdom Communities participated in confined space rescue training at the Newport City Fire Department. The departments that took part in the four-day class include Newport City, Jay, Orleans and Newark.Â
Confined space rescue involves the rescue and recovery of victims trapped in a confined space or in a place accessible through a confined space, such as underground vaults, storage silos, storage tanks or sewers.Â
NEWPORT CITY â€“ Last Thursday, the Vermont Public Service Board held a public hearing over the Vermont Interactive Television (VIT) Network to give Vermonters input on Smart Meters and Smart Grid technology.
Smart Meters enable utility companies to read electric meters without the need of going to the customerâ€™s house. Smart meters can send data over the utility line or wirelessly over the airwaves.
