NEWPORT, VT - It should be freezing outside. We should have at least a few feet of snow left. Instead, weather records are being broken in the other direction - up!
As if on cue, warm weather arrived just as Tim and Doug's ice cream stand opened for the season - or maybe it was the other way around. Here, Evan Sherlaw, seven, of Derby, and his four-year-old brother Sam enjoy a yummy treat.
The ice cream stand, operated by Pick & Shovel hardware store in Newport, has become a local favorite for all ice cream lovers.
WASHINGTON, DC - In a move that has struck a nerve with Occupy and protest groups throughout the United States, Pres. Obama signed into law last week what has been called the "anti-protest" or "anti-Occupy" law.
MORGAN - Ice fishing on Lake Seymour is reported to being spotty this year, but Morgan resident Bud Bergh, who has ice fished on Seymour for over 40 years, says it's just another average year.
Bergh said some people complain that they aren't getting good results, but he notes, “If they don't get 100 fish, they aren't happy,” and adds, “It averages out over time.” Bergh said between himself, his wife Ginny and daughter Briana, they caught six fish, mostly lake trout, in excess of 5 pounds this season. “We caught a lot of 4 pounders this year.”
NEWPORT, VT - The lawsuit between the City of Newport and Derby Village trustees over billing for water that wasn't used is slowly grinding its way to a resolution. But the final decision will be up to a judge, and not an agreement between the parties.
Two mediation sessions have been held with no agreement between the parties and both sides have asked the judge to not schedule a third meeting, but instead to proceed to trial.
Six Deslandes Blue Wave Tae Kwon Do students attended a tournament held on March 10th in Milton. The group pictured were at their very first competition, and they ranged in age from 5 to 6 years old. There was a great turn out for the tournament, with every age being represented. The students competed in forms, breaking, and sparring, and walked away winners while displaying great sportsmanship. Deslandes strives to teach their students to compete with respect, and most of all, have a great time!
NEWPORT CITY – Many Vermonters are watching their wallets shrink as their living expenses climb out of control. That is certainly true in the Northeast Kingdom. Just ask the folks at Northeast Kingdom Community Action (NEKCA).
NEKCA officials say more and more people are asking for help.Â
Part of the reason for the increase is the high cost of fuel and individuals running out of food stamps before the end of the month.
DERBY - Members of the community who went to McDonald’s Wednesday night between 5 and 7 helped raise money for the Newport City Elementary 5th Grade.
Mrs. Lowell, Mrs. Pare, and Mr. Royer took orders and worked behind the counter, while Principal Stephen Earley and Mayor Paul Monette helped keep the place clean for those two hours.
The team raised $400 for the 5th grade trip to Boston!
