United Christian Girls Fall to Rockets 5-0 in Season Opener

NEWPORT–The UCA Lady Crusaders opened play on Thursday afternoon as they hosted the Richford Rockets for a little Division IV soccer action.
While UCA gave it their all out on the field, the end result would be in favor of the visiting Rockets, as Richford came away with a win to move on 1-0 on the young season.
"The girls had an amazing effort,"said UCA coach Lyne Limoges. "We have a lot of new players and we've got our seasoned players and I think they held their own very well."

North Country Starts Season With 3-1 Win Over Montpelier

NEWPORT–The North Country Falcons field hockey team started their regular season off in fine style, as they defeated the Montpelier Solons 3-1 at home on Wednesday afternoon.
"I saw the team from last year, give or take a few girls," said NC coach Chantelle Bouchard, explaining what she saw out on the field on Wednesday. "They played like they wanted to win. They came out here and I said 'We are playing like it is out last game' and that is what they did. I hope this is the start of a phenomenal season."

Brighton Negotiating Island Purchase

BRIGHTON — The town selectmen are considering buying the 22-acre island that graces the two-mile long lake. The island that has been held in private hands for hundreds of years.

AnC Bio Sends Requested Information To Act 250

AnC Bio developers have submitted the requested information to the District 7 Environmental Commission for review. Coordinator Warren Foster confirmed Wednesday that they have the information and are currently reviewing it. Foster also said that they are waiting for various Agency of Natural Resources permits as well.

Judge VanBenthuysen Moves On

NEWPORT CITY – After two years of ruling justice in Orleans County, judge Howard VanBenthuysen is moving on to another county. Judge Tim Tomasi replaces VanBenthuysen.
Friday was VanBenthuysen’s last day in Orleans County.

Falcons Strike First, but BFA Rallies to Earn 1-1 Tie

NEWPORT–The North Country girls soccer team welcomed in the BFA Comets on Tuesday afternoon as the two kicked off their 2014 campaigns.
Devinnie Davis would net her first goal of the season, but BFA rallied back to tie the game with under ten minutes to play in the second, and after overtime settled nothing, the two teams settled for a split.
"I thought we worked really, really hard," said NC coach Jose Batista. "We still have somethings we need to work on, but I thought it was a gutsy performance. We have a lot of people who are banged up, but we will have to play through that."

Department Of Labor Cuts Career Center Penalty In Half

The Vermont Department of Labor has reduced the $3,500 penalty against North Country Career Center (NCCC) to $1,750.
The Department of Labor investigated the career center’s Harold J. Haynes Memorial Land Lab on the Quarry Road in Derby following a life-threatening accident by former teacher Fern Fontaine.

Out Of The Darkness Walk This Weekend

According to the American Foundation for Suicide, in the United States, a person dies by suicide every 13.7 minutes and claims more than 38,000 lives every year.

To raise awareness of suicide and mental illness, groups across the country hold Out of the Darkness Walks. The local walk will take place Saturday, Sept. 6, in Gardner Park.

Local Students Attend World Affairs Seminar

Megan Hosford, now a senior at United Christian Academy, and Victoria Hodgeman-Petit, now a senior at Lake Region Union High School gave a report recently to the Boundary Rotary Club members and guests on their experiences at the World Affairs Seminar (WAS) that they attended in June at Carroll University in Wisconsin.
