Cumby’s Gets a Makeover

NEWPORT CITY – The Cumberland Farms Store on East Main Street is undergoing a renovation project that company officials say will meet the needs of the customers on the go.
Kate Ngo, who does marketing strategy for the company, said Cumberland Farms is starting to implement a new plan after test marketing it at 50 of the 580 or so stores the company has.
“It’s part of a whole new branding campaign,” she said. “We like to offer additional products and services to the customer.”
When complete, the company will have various types of prepared food products.

Derby Planning Commission Seeks New Member

DERBY - The Derby Selectmen accepted "with regret" the resignation of long-time Town Planner Cynthia Adams Monday evening and paved the way for the possibility of someone from Derby Line Village serving on the board.
The selectmen said they would begin advertising for the position.
Adams has a conflict with the Monday evening time slot, when the Planning Commission meets. She had asked the board to consider changing the day of the meetings, but said that if another planner couldn’t make it on a different night, she would step down.

Community Rallies to Support IROC

DERBY - "We are pleased to report the following," Phil White, executive director of Indoor Recreation of Orleans County (IROC) wrote in the opening of his announcement regarding developments in the IROC funding situation.
White reported that National Life donated the time of Fred Barnett, Director of Facility Operations, to assist in troubleshooting issues and general operations of the facility itself. He has identified the issues in the air exchange and de-humidification in the pool area of the facility.

High Hopes for Lady Rangers

Coach Brad Urie enters his 4th year as the Lake Region Girls Varsity Soccer Coach, and he and his team plan to hit the ground running. Long gone are the days of double-digit defeats and small numbers in the win column. This is a new era for girls’ soccer at Lake Region.
Coming off a year where he saw his Lady Rangers finish with the best overall season in school history, he and his team know the expectations are high, but Urie also says “it’ll take hard work, practice, and determination, to compete with the teams in the Mountain League.”

Rangers Getting Ready for 2011

With the start of the 2011 soccer campaign here, Varsity coach Tom Evans, is set to begin his 30th year at the helm of the Lake Region Program. This year’s Ranger team will look a lot different from the year before, 8 Seniors lost to graduation and 1 player returning home, to Spain, as a result of the Foreign Exchange Program. But, even with all of the changes, Coach Evans, will have 10 returning players, including his 5 seniors: Caleb Royer, Matt Morin, Tony Stuart, Kyle Perry, and Corey Whitten.

Wind Power Protesters Tackle Montpelier

MONTPELIER – More than 100 wind tower opponents, particularly those opposed to the one Green Mountain Power has planned for a ridgeline in Lowell, gathered at the State House yesterday morning. The protesters strongly voiced their opposition to the project and Bread and Puppet Theater of Glover put on a skit supporting the protesters.
After delivering a lengthy letter to Gov. Peter Shumlin’s office and comment cards to the Department of Public Service, the opponents boarded buses that took them to the Green Mountain Power office in Colchester where they delivered a second letter.

Gone Fishing

NEWPORT CITY – The secret is about to get out: Lake Memphremagog has great fishing for families.
Lake Region Fishing is looking at filming on the international lake.
Vermont’s North Country Chamber of Commerce has collaborated with the Newport City Renaissance Corporation and Northeast Kingdom Travel and Tourism Association to lure the nationally recognized television program to the region.

Derby Won’t Meet VELCO Deadline for PSB Recommendation

DERBY - Brian Smith, Chairman of the Derby Select Board, said the board is not going to issue a recommendation on behalf of the Vermont Electric Company (VELCO) to the Public Service Board (PSB) by Sept. 1. VELCO had agreed to postpone submitting their application for a Certificate of Public Good to the PSB at the request of town officials.
However, Smith said he is considering a discussion with each member of the select board in an open meeting and then sending comments to the PSB during the comment period following the filing by VELCO.
