Flood Waters Continue Assault

April 28, 2011

ORLEANS CO. – Flood waters were still rising Thursday following even more rain as rescue crews searched the area for stranded residents. Washouts were common and more rain is expected over the weekend, only not as bad as what we’ve seen so far.
Sandbags were used to protect the Chamber of Commerce building on the Causeway in Newport, next to the flooded Gardner Park.
Owners of camps and homes are holding their breath as flood waters surround their properties. According to some, this is the worst flooding they have ever seen.

Flooding Slams Northeast Kingdom

April 27, 2011

ORLEANS CO. – Tuesday’s heavy rains caused numerous roads to flood in the Northeast Kingdom. Local roads underwater include Route 5 between Newport City and Coventry and between Barton and Orleans as well as Route 100 just before Troy, the River Road between Orleans and Coventry, and numerous back dirt roads. Flooding also forced numerous schools to close throughout the state and more rain was expected.

Flooding Halts Freight Trains

April 27, 2011

BARTON – Massive flooding in Northern Vermont stopped freight trains in their tracks Wednesday. Washouts left two sections of rail, their ties hanging from the tracks, dangling over washed out areas.
In the Northeast Kingdom, flood waters undermined the tracks near the Barton River in Barton.
Newport Airport manager Dan Gauvin spotted the washout in Barton as he did a flyover of the area. He called the Newport Express and the report was then passed on to Joe Flynn, Director of the Rail Division for VTrans, who thanked Gauvin for the information.
