NEWPORT CITY – Protesters picketed the Safe Choices Program in the parking lot overlooking the Gateway Center Wednesday evening. They were hoping to send a message to Dr. Susan Wehry, commissioner of the Department of Disabilities, Aging and Independent Living, that they are unhappy with the Safe Choices Program.
Wehry was the keynote speaker at a Family Caregiver Retreat at the Gateway Center.
Second judge issues temporary relief from abuse order to protect Bennett from another client.
NEWPORT – Judge Dennis Pearson recently issued an emergency order preventing the Department of Aging and Independent Living (DAIL) from interfering with William Bennett's right to speak privately and meaningfully with his attorney, Gertrude Miller.

IRASBURG – On Monday evening, residents faced off with representatives from Vermont Electric Corporative (VEC) and Green Mountain Power (GMP) over the Kingdom Community Wind Project. The meeting, held at the town hall, was part of the regular select board meeting.
Answering questions raised by Dr. Ron Holland, David Hallquist of VEC said the actual cost of generating power, after figuring in the capacity factor is between nine and ten cents a kilowatt, which is before any renewable energy credits.
NEWPORT – Mark Beezup, 55, of Derby, was arraigned in Orleans County Criminal Court Tuesday on two felonies: sexual assault–parental role, and lewd and lascivious conduct with a child.
Beezup denied the charges and was released on conditions that he not have any contact with children under the age of 16, other than his own, per orders of the Department of Children and Families.
Beezup was accused of sexual behavior by his girlfriend’s daughter, now 14, who claimed the incidents began when she was 12.
Beezup lived with the girl and her mother for approximately six years.

ALBANY — Jennifer Tolman, treasurer for the Albany Fire Department and a member of its school board, sent a public letter of apology to the Newport Daily Express recently on the heels of allegations that she may be responsible for the loss of over $6,000 from the town's fire department.
Following a recent audit, Fire Chief Donald Peters confirmed that he reported the findings to the Vermont State Police and suspected that charges either would be or have been filed against Tolman.
The Newport Express has received reports that the money has been paid back.

NEWPORT – Fantasy is in the air this time of year as high school students head to the prom, some as traditional couples and others, more recently, in groups of girls or guys.
Lake Region Union High School’s prom was Saturday, May 14th at the Elks Club in Derby and North Country Union High School’s prom is in the gym Saturday, May 21st. The United Christian Academy held its senior banquet at the EastSide Restaurant Saturday.
