Although the state road to Island Pond from East Charleston (VT105) is closed due to damage from Tropical Storm Irene, you can still get there from wherever you are, with some effort. VT111 is undamaged and a good paved road from Derby area. The Ten Mile Square road by Northwoods Stewardship Center is another viable option from Charleston area, and VT114 south from Lyndonville is also open - now that the bridge is fixed. It is unknown how long the road will be closed.
DERBY - The Derby Planning Commission gave Northeast Kingdom Human Services (NKHS) the green light to build a new facility on the Crawford Road. Currently NKHS has three locations in the Newport area: one on Dutchess Street in Newport, one on the Lake Road, and the other on Citizens Road in Derby.
The move was triggered in part by plans for the Lake Road location to be developed into a new biotech industrial and research site.
NEWPORT CITY â€“ Judged Robert Bent handed down a three to six month suspended sentence to two Orleans County women for stealing from the Family Dollar Store in Newport.
Fawn Norris of Orleans and Dawn Norris of Newport, both 27, will each serve 40 hours of community service. The women were also placed on probation.
According to Newport City Police Officer Travis Bingham, a clerk at the Family Dollar Store told police she saw one of the women put a shirt into a bag. The clerk continued to watch the women who both put items into their bags.

NEWPORT CITY â€“ A West Charleston man faces up to 25 years in prison or a $1,000 fine or both for allegedly burglarizing a home while the residents were present. On Tuesday, Everardus Proper, 34, pleaded not guilty to the felony charge.
On Aug. 21, Trooper Debra Munson received a report of a home invasion and burglary in Barton. Melissa Dobson told police that she was awakened by a man rummaging through her belongings in her room. Dobson thought it was her brother, Benjamin Hiscock, looking for her laptop, and she went back to sleep.
