PSB Bashes Attempts to Delay Wind Project

LOWELL - The Vermont Public Service Board (PSB) has denied motions by opposing parties that would have stopped construction of the Kingdom Wind project in Lowell pending a decision by the Vermont Supreme Court on appeals that have been filed by opponents.
The motions were intended to halt tree clearing activities and construction. The appeals are intended to reverse the PSB's granting of a Certificate of Public Good for the project.
Last week, heavy equipment began creating a staging area and reinforcing a road at the base of the mountain range.

Newport, Vermont and Magog, Quebec – On the weekend of the 10th anniversary of 9/11, 11 extraordinary marathon open water swimmers undertook the 25 mile international, cross border swim the length of Lake Memphremegog from Newport to Magog. They were supported by 21 yackers and 12 boat pilots and crew.
The expedition was organized and hosted by the Northeast Kingdom Open Water Swimming Association and IROC and was sponsored and outfitted by Newport Marine Services, Clyde River Recreation, and Great Outdoors.

Tasha Robbins Sentenced for Drug Dealing

NEWPORT CITY – A Newport City woman says she told drugs because her family needed the money to buy baby formula and food.
Last Thursday the woman, Tasha Robbins, a/k/a Tasha Hisman, was given five sentences of 2-5 years each, concurrent with each other, with credit for time served. Meanwhile, her boyfriend Charles Hisman, 30, of Newport City, is facing one felony count of the sale of heroin and one felony count for the delivery of heroin. She asked the court to be lenient on her sentence because she is seven months pregnant.

Dumpster Fire Clouds Eastside in Smoke

Firefighters extinguish a fire in a dumpster at the Eastside Restaurant Saturday evening.
Firefighters were called to the restaurant around 8 p.m. The cause of the fire that spread to the fence around the dumpster is unknown. The smoke was extensive but the damage was localized.

Passing on the Memory

NEWPORT CITY – Americans nationwide attended ceremonies to remember the men and women who died in the terrorists attacks on Sept. 11, 2001. 
Newport area Cub Scouts and Boy Scouts held a brief ceremony, which included raising the Flag of Heroes in Railroad Square. The flag is similar to the American Flag in shape and design but has the name of every person who was killed during the 9/11 terrorist attacks. 

Still digging for clues in O’Hagan murder

SHEFFIELD – Saturday marked the one-year anniversary of when 78-year-old Pat O’Hagan disappeared. On Oct. 3, hunters discovered O’Hagan’s body in Wheelock, about 10 miles from her home. Police called her death a homicide.
Major Ed Ledo, of the Vermont State Police, held a press conference at the Sheffield Town Hall Friday. He said law enforcement officers believe more than one person was involved with the crime. Based on information that came in during the investigation, police searched two nearby bodies of water, Ledo said, but he did not say what evidence was being sought.

Twin Tower Fragment in Barton

BARTON – A 105-pound piece of I-beam from Ground Zero has made its way to the Northeast Kingdom. Thanks to the Kimtek Corporation of Westmore, that piece is now sealed in a special case fabricated of stainless steel and Plexiglass.
The Barton Ambulance Service obtained the piece of I-beam in 2003. It was part of a larger piece removed from the World Trade Center. Local officials are not sure who retrieved it from the site.
The mayor of Washingtonville, NY, presented the piece to members of the Barton Ambulance Service, whose members had made several visits to the New York community.

Gunman Shoots Up Orleans Sunoco & Lyndon Cumby’s

ORLEANS - State police are looking for the gunman who fired shots into two Northeast Kingdom convenience stores Thursday morning.
Detective Lt. Bob Cushing said that at about 1:50 a.m., state police received a 911 call about a shooting at the Orleans Sunoco.
At 2:40 a.m., state police received a second call about a shooting at the Cumberland Farms Store in Lyndonville.
The clerk at the Cumberland Farms store sustained minor injuries from broken glass from the bullet.
Nobody else was injured.

IROC Gets Huge Boost

DERBY — Indoor Recreation of Orleans County (IROC) reduced a large portion of its debt load Wednesday when Fran Azur and Melanie Gefert, of Newport Center and Pennsylvania, stepped in to help IROC settle a large debt.
Azur negotiated with The Jenesis Group in a deal where Azur paid $65,000 toward the IROC debt of $650,000 and fully eliminated the debt. The unsecured note of $650,000 was to come due Nov. 1 and could have forced IROC into bankruptcy.

Newport Economic Summit Promises Big Changes

NEWPORT CITY — About a 100 or so community leaders met at the Gateway Center Wednesday evening to hear what was accomplished in the city and what the future holds. 
Newport City Mayor Paul Monette said it is amazing how far the city has come since the first visit by the Regional Urban Design Assistance Team (R/UDAT) in 2007. One of the most important things that happened is the development of a partnership between the public and private sector.
