DERBY - The Louis Garneau USA Company has applied to open a 60,000 square foot, two-story manufacturing facility on the Derby Road near the Interstate 91 exit ramp. Louis Garneau is a world leader in cycling helmets and apparel as well as a variety of other sport products. The company was started in Canada and an office was opened in Newport in 1989.
If the company proceeds with the project, the new building would house the manufacturing section, offices, and retail store that are currently located on East Main Street in Newport, according to a narrative filed with Derby.
NEWPORT CITY – In Orleans District Court Wednesday, Kyle Wilson, 18, of Milton, entered guilty pleas to felony burglary, felony unlawful trespass of an occupied residence and unlawful mischief with damages greater than $1,000.
Sgt. Seth DiSanto of the Newport City Police, in his affidavit, wrote that he and Sgt. Royce Lancaster responded to a home on Green Place in Newport on Feb. 24th, around 1:50 PM, in response to a report of a possible unlawful trespass. The caller told police that the home was unoccupied and for sale.

Three new fluorescent orange bollards were recently installed in the driveway of the old railroad station in Island Pond, near the drive through for Community National Bank. The historic building, which is owned by the town of Brighton, had been damaged by over-height vehicles clipping the corner of the roof on multiple occasions. Several thousand dollars worth of damage to the steel infrastructure and roof above were paid for by town insurance claims. To deter future incidents and protect the building, three vertical posts were installed.

NEWPORT CITY – Orleans County Judge Robert Bent handed down a one to two month suspended sentence to a Newport City man on Tuesday. Jessie Nichols, 50, entered a guilty plea to a misdemeanor charge of disorderly conduct.

NEWPORT CITY – In Orleans District Court Judge Robert Bent sentenced a Winooski woman to three to six months, all suspended, plus probation and conditions for felony and misdemeanor charges relating to drug possession.
On Tuesday, Rise Berard, 62, entered a plea of guilty to both a felony and a misdemeanor charge of possession of a depressant/stimulant/narcotic.

IRASBURG – A 100-foot pine tree was the cause of a mass power outage that left homes and businesses throughout southern Orleans County in the dark. The tree fell on an electrical transmission line on Sugar House Drive, just south of Irasburg Village, around 5:45 a.m Wednesday morning.
John Morley, Orleans Village Manager, said that Orleans Electric, Barton Electric and the Vermont Electric Corporative own the transmission line. In all, 1,450 VEC members, 700 Orleans Electric Members and 850 Barton Electric members were without power until just before 9 a.m.
The Vermont State Police and Newport City Fire Department responded to this two vehicle crash on Route 105 in Coventry Monday evening. Trooper Ben Shelp said that Marley Willis, 45, of Westfield was traveling west on Route 105 when she stopped to avoid colliding with a deer. Gerard Petit, 63, of Coventry, who was also traveling west on Route 105, was unable to stop and collided with Willis' vehicle. Nobody was injured in the crash. Photos by Christopher Roy

DERBY– James Johnson attended the Derby Selectboard meeting Monday evening to express his indignation over learning that his properties on Lake Salem are in violation of a Town Bylaw.
Johnson owns two camps on the lake. He had the camps raised a few inches after the flooding that occurred during the spring. The raising of the camps without a permit puts Johnson in violation of the Bylaw.
