A Happy Thanksgiving for 300

DERbY - More than 300 came together for the annual Thanksgiving Day community celebration at the Elks Club in Derby. The event was a joint effort between the Elks Club, the First Universalist Parish of Derby Line, the Area Agency on Aging, and many others.

Theft Victim Hunts Down Stolen Property

NEWPORT CITY – State police say a Newport man stole $6,200 from the father of his former girlfriend, and the father followed the clues to the doorstep of the accused.
Tuesday, Daniel Beaumont, 23, entered pleas of not guilty to a felony charge of grand larceny and a misdemeanor charge of possession of a depressant, stimulant or narcotic.
On Sept. 27, 2010, Todd Willis reported that someone stole a lockbox located in a closet in his Derby home. The box contained cash wrapped in currency wrappers and the bills were in sequential order. The box also contained several vehicle titles.

Explosion and Fire Demolish Camp

CRAFTSBURY – Fire destroyed a camp located off the Town Line Road Tuesday afternoon.
Craftsbury Fire Chief Walter Gutzmann said firefighters were called to a camp around noon. The camp was owned by Roger Martin. The fire is believed to have started sometime after 10 AM.
State police dispatchers initially toned the Albany Fire Department because they didn’t know where the fire was. The first firefighters on the scene found a fully engulfed hunting camp. They had the blaze under control in about an hour.

Bridge Construction Outlined

NEWPORT CITY – During Monday's City Council meeting, officials from the Agency of Transportation presented the framework for what exactly will happen during the reconstruction of the Long Bridge.
The council also approved lifting the noise ordinance while the state paves US Route 5 from the Airport Road to Coventry Street so that crews may pave at night to reduce traffic tie-ups. Part of the paving project includes roads intended for the detoured traffic blocked from using the Long Bridge.  

Hayes Ford & Vista Deliver a Happy Thanksgiving

NEWPORT - Once again Hayes Ford teamed up with Vista Foods to collect and distribute complete Thanksgiving Dinners to local families in need, just in time for the holiday.
The food was distributed to local organizations such as senior centers, churches and schools.

Protesters Deny Charges

NEWPORT, VT - The two young men arrested on Lowell Mountain for contempt of court both pleaded innocent to the misdemeanor charge in Orleans Superior Court Criminal Division Tuesday morning.
They were released on conditions. David Martorana, 19, and Trevor Ring, 20, both Sterling College students, were arrested on Lowell Mountain around 10 AM on Nov. 9.
The mountain "occupiers" oppose the construction of the industrial scale Lowell wind turbine project and are camping on the mountain near the construction site.

Charleston School Adopts Moretown Elementary Families for the Holidays

CHARLESTON, VT - Moretown Elementary School is in one of the communities hard hit by Hurricane Irene. Charleston learned about Moretown Elementary School when it was highlighted on the Channel 3 News.
Charleston’s Interim Principal Sharon Gonyaw made an outreach call to Moretown and asked how the Charleston School could help. School officials spoke with Mrs. Gonyaw about five families who are still displaced from their homes.
Charleston staff and students have adopted those five families.

Keene Medical Denies Sexual Harassment

NEWPORT CITY – Officials from Keene Medical Products are strongly denying allegations of sexual harassment and of intentional infliction of emotional harm to a former employee, Heather O' Neil. O'Neil has filed a complaint against Keene claiming Newport Branch Manager Joseph Lemieux and others engaged in the offensive behavior.
O’Neil said Lemieux, and at times other men in the office, subjected her to severe and pervasive sexual harassment in the form of cruel sexual taunts, lewd and offensive sexually explicit language and invitations to engage in inappropriate activity.
