DISASTER AVERTED

November 25, 2012

NEWPORT CITY – Columbia Forest Products employees will be on the job today even though a Sunday morning fire caused significant damage to part of the plant.
Firefighters responded to the plant, located off Union Street in Newport City, around 8:30 a.m. Upon arrival, firefighters saw smoke and there was fire in the boiler room and on the roof of the building.
This particular boiler room primarily feeds the vat, which the company uses to condition the logs prior to processing.

Community Thanksgiving Biggest Ever

DERBY – Hundreds enjoyed a thanksgiving feast during the 9th annual Community Thanksgiving Dinner at the Elks Lodge in Derby, an international event.
More than 500 meals were served both at the Derby facility and at private homes. More than 200 meals were served to those who could not attend the event.
Some Canadians enjoyed the meal as well.
Much of the food was grown locally or donated from local businesses and individuals. A farmer in Stanstead, Que., grew and donated 185 pounds of potatoes.

OAK STREET BLAZE

NEWPORT CITY – Quick action by city firefighters saved a home from fire Friday evening. Firefighters responded to 46 Oak Street at 4:12 p.m. Travis Glodgett owns the three family building.
Upon arrival, flames and smoke were showing on the backside of the home. Fire Chief Jamie LeClair said all three units were rented but only one tenant was home when the fire broke out.
Firefighters knocked the fire down within minutes of their arrival.
