RENAISSANCE CORP. SEEKS MORE FUNDING

November 7, 2012

NEWPORT, VT - The Newport City Council is considering a request by the Newport City Renaissance Corporation (NCRC) for a $25,000 increase to its appropriation, already $25,000. NCRC would use the funds for its operations, marketing efforts and things like bike racks.
NCRC would like to bring in a second person to help CEO Trish Sears’ office efforts. Sears is the organization’s only paid employee, but NCRC does have some contract workers who do such things as work on the organization’s website. Board members volunteer their time at no cost.

PHOTO FINISH: Election night leaves hot races too tight to call.

November 7, 2012

NEWPORT, VT - It was a nailbiter, and even with most of the votes in, the unofficial tallies made it too close to call in several local hot races last night.
In the race for Orleans-Essex Senate seat, incumbent Democrat Bobby Starr pulled ahead but Rep. Bob Lewis and former Rep. John Rodgers were hot on his heels. It looked like a race for second with Republican Jay Dudley trailing far behind.
In the Orleans-Lamoille House Race, Progressive challenger Katherine Sims looked to overtake incumbent Rep. Mark Higley, Republican.

BRIGHTON TOWN HALL REBORN

November 5, 2012

BRIGHTON – The Town Hall of Brighton is under renovations to restore it to its original grandeur and bring back the exceptional character of that time.
The building, known as the Historic Opera Block, was built in 1889. Over the years some of the original parts of the building were taken down or covered with vinyl siding. But after expansive work and research, the building will go through a renaissance. The new materials will keep it in excellent condition for years to come with little maintenance.

LAKEBRIDGE OPENS

November 5, 2012

NEWPORT CITY – There’s no place like home, and for 21 Newport area families, home will be the Lakebridge housing complex at the former Sleeper Place site on West Main Street.
Rural Edge, formerly known as Gilman Housing Trust, owns the new housing complex. Like all of Rural Edge’s properties, tenants’ rents are one third of their income. The apartments have one-, two- and three-bedroom units.
The Lakebridge complex has been in the works for some time, Merten Bangeman-Johnson, Chief Executive Officer for Rural Edge, said during a ribbon cutting ceremony Friday morning.

Last July, nearly three years after her husband Charles Billis died in a car crash, she pleaded guilty to an amended charge of manslaughter.
During the investigation, Billis told investigators that Charles Billis was abusive to her.

The Vermont Supreme Court suspended Simendinger’s license on an emergency basis pending an investigation.
The disciplinary council for the Professional Responsibility Board petitioned the court for the interim suspension but an investigator for the board refused to comment on the particulars.
