Businesses Fret Details of 19-Month Bridge Fix

NEWPORT CITY – Individuals concerned with the replacement of the Long Bridge met with city and project officials at the Newport City Council Room yesterday afternoon.
Work will start March 5 and will be complete around Oct. 18, 2013, 19 months later. Workers will typically be on site from 6 a.m. to about 5 p.m. However, there might be times when workers want to remain on the jobsite later.
The majority of public concerns came from business owners in Railroad Square. John Robillard from Poulin Grain wanted to make sure his company would be able to operate during construction.

Wind Blows Hot in Derby

DERBY - Controversy continues to mount over the proposed Derby Line Wind Project.
Vicky and Daniel Lewis live on Whittier Road, about one mile from where one of the turbines would be located. The Lewises came to the Derby Select Board's regular meeting, Monday evening, prepared with information and many questions for the board.

Principal, Board Chair Defend City School Budget Increase

NEWPORT CITY - The Newport City School Board outlined its 2012-2013 budget to the city council Monday evening. Residents will vote on the budget on Town Meeting Day. The budget this year has a 4.98 percent increase.
Principal Stephen Earley, who presented the budget with school board chairman Leo Willey, said the school board had level funded the budget for the past five years. The increase would mean about a $44 increase on a $100,000 home.
