Sweet, Sweet Music

NEWPORT, VT - The Newport Rotary Club's 68th Annual Northeastern Vermont Music Festival was held this weekend at North Country Union High School. Students from all over northern Vermont participated.
The event featured a festival chorus and band, a series of ensembles and some great music directed by music teachers from various schools.

Local Protesters Seek Justice for Florida Teen

BARTON – Demonstrators gathered in Barton Friday to call attention to a number of issues they feel passionately about. About a dozen people turned out and several held signs regarding the unarmed black teen who was shot and killed in Florida late February. Others held signs in memory of Melissa Jenkins, the St. Johnsbury Academy teacher who was brutally murdered last week, while others held signs for peace and other issues.
Some demonstrators said they are part of the Peace and Justice Group, some said they are part of the Occupy 99 percent group.

Wearing Pink for Melissa Jenkins

NEWPORT, VT - People throughout the Northeast Kingdom and beyond wore pink Friday to honor the memory of Melissa Jenkins, the single mom and St. Johnsbury Academy teacher and coach who was slain last Sunday evening.
United Christian Academy (UCA) students, faculty and staff joined in the remembrance and brought in donations totaling hundreds of dollars for the Melissa Jenkins Memorial Fund.
UCA Headmaster Dr. Richard O'Hara said that the school wanted to help any way it could. O'Hara noted that UCA can relate, having lost one of their own last year to tragedy.
