Three Charged in Brutal Assault

NEWPORT CITY - Three men are now in jail following a brutal home invasion. Donald Cross, 46, of Newport, is being held on $50,000 cash or surety bond; David Fletcher, 20, of Coventry, and Peter Cirone, 43, of Newport, are each being held on $20,000.
The three are lodged at Northern State Correctional Facility.
After receiving a 9-1-1 call early Sunday morning, Newport City Police headed to Second Street and found a man, Mark Perron, covered in blood with lacerations on his face and who could barely speak. Perron had made his way to a neighbor’s home following the assault.

NEK Human Services Claims Attorney’s Subpoenas are Harassment

NEWPORT, VT - Attorney Gertrude Miller and Northeast Kingdom Human Services (NKHS) are going head to head in a battle over information that Miller says is vital to her client's defense in the case of State v. Christopher Smith.
Smith, who has a developmental disability, was charged with pulling a knife on journalist Jennifer Hersey-Cleveland and demanding she take off her clothes. Hersey-Cleveland did not fall victim to the threats and managed to escape Smith.
