Sam Young: Old roots and new ideas

July 11, 2012

GLOVER – Rep. Sam Young, who lives on the land his ancestors moved to just after the Civil War, is looking forward to serving the people of the Northeast Kingdom.
Young, a Democrat, has served the voters in the Orleans-Caledonia district for one term alongside Republican Vicki Strong in the two-member district.
“I like the work and I’ve learned a lot,” said Young. Young said voters invested two years in him and it took him that long to get good at it. “If I spend two years of my life doing something, I want to get good at it.”

Coventry Weighs Cost of Fire Dept.

July 11, 2012

COVENTRY – Resident Pedro Grondin met with the select board Tuesday evening in an attempt to get Coventry to start its own fire department.
Last month, select board chair Mike Marcotte and selectman Brad Maxwell met with the Newport City Council to see if there is interest in getting in a contract for fire coverage. As it is now, Coventry pays per call. A contract would mean Coventry pays a flat fee, which would make budgeting easier for fire coverage.
After a brief discussion, the Newport City Council gave the okay for representatives to start discussions.
