QNEK Kicks off Season with “Ruthless!”

DERBY LINE/STANSTEAD, QUE. - QNEK Productions, the international theater company in residence at the Haskell Opera House, kicks off its 2012 season with the production of "Ruthless! The Musical," an off-Broadway production. This show has won the New York Outer Critics Circle Award for the best off-Broadway musical of 1993.

Ron Kubica, MD, put himself through college as a silversmith.
He grew up in New Mexico, and as a young doctor he spent several years treating Navajo and Hopi families and later the Cherokee in Oklahoma in the Indian Health Service.

In Search of Drowning Victim

NEWPORT - Rescue crews responded to the area around the WIKE tower on Lake Memphremagog in Newport for a reported drowning yesterday afternoon.
No official details were available as of press time.
Friends of the missing person, who is believed to be a Canadian tourist, were speaking with law enforcement officials.
Newport City Police, Vermont State Police, Newport City Fire Department and Ambulance Service, and U.S. Border Patrol officers were on hand.

Century Old Pipes Leave Village Holding the Bill

DERBY LINE – Raw village sewage has flowed into a Derby Line home on Caswell Avenue on at least two occasions within about a week’s time.
The homeowner was present for the village trustee’s regular meeting Tuesday evening. She had a bill from a local plumber and is expecting another bill.
She said when her basement filled up with sewage she didn’t know where it was coming from, so she called the plumber. The next time the plumber showed up, he suggested she call the village.

Council Advised on Open Meeting law

NEWPORT CITY – Members of governing bodies have to be careful what they discuss outside a warned meeting or at an informal gathering. Last week, city attorney Bill Davies outlined to council members what Vermont law allows and doesn’t allow regarding open meeting laws.

More Wind Woes for Derby

DERBY - Just as the controversy on wind turbines in Derby was simmering down, a new proposal for a turbine has re-ignited the debate, but at a smaller scale. The Derby Planning Commission heard from a group of residents and a wind developer Monday who brought up many of the same arguments the town heard before, even though the new proposal is for a smaller turbine.
A Derby resident wants to put a small turbine on her property but a nearby neighbor and others are not happy.

Jay Peak, Burke Plan Busy Capital Improvement Season

JAY, VT - Jay Peak has begun work on its $30 million summer improvements project. Renovations to transform the Sky Haus summit tram station into a 120-seat restaurant, and the Austria Haus into a Vermont-styled country store are well underway.
Plus, construction of the new Mountain Learning Center at the Stateside area of the resort will begin at the end of the month. Two new chairlifts will also be online by the time the snow starts to fall.

Starr, Dems Show Strong Backing for John Rodgers

GLOVER - Shortly after 7 PM Monday, Democrat John S. Rodgers officially launched his candidacy for the Vermont State Senate.
Speaking to a small crowd gathered under a white tent behind the Parker Pie Company in West Glover, VT, Rodgers spoke about his intention to do what is right for his constituents.
Rodgers urged voters to trust his record. Rodgers said that Republican opponent Bob Lewis, who has been endorsed by outgoing state senator Vince Illuzzi, may have been in Montpelier "to occupy a seat," but while Rodgers served in the Vermont House, he was there to get things done.

Attempted Bedroom Burglary in Derby

DERBY - Vermont State Police have reported an attempted burglary at the Lague residence on Ridegehill Drive in Derby.
According to police, a man attempted to punch out a window into a basement bedroom but was confronted by the occupant, Joshua Lague, who was woken by the sound of broken glass. Lague gave chase on foot but the thwarted burglar escaped.
Police believe the burglar may have escaped to a nearby car because evidence suggests a vehicle peeled out, leaving skid marks behind.

Wind turbine parts arrive in Island Pond

BRIGHTON – The wind turbine parts destined for Green Mountain Power’s (GMP) wind turbine project on the Lowell Mountains are arriving in Island Pond’s train yard. The parts will wait at a staging area at a nearby lumber yard.
Joel Cope, the administrative assistant in Brighton, said there were concerns but the town has worked closely with GMP, the state, and the trucking companies to ensure any issues are addressed.
