BARTON - The Orleans County Fairgrounds were vandalized during the overnight hours Wednesday. The vandals poured buckets of paint on the floors, smashed various structures, emptied several fire extinguishers, and painted profanity on several walls, inside and out. The profanity consisted of vulgar language and some racist slurs.
August 1st
NEWPORT - In a ceremony lacking frills or attention, Newport City made a quiet transition Wednesday as Seth DiSanto was sworn in as the new Chief of Police.
The event occurred in the city council chambers with Newport City Clerk and Treasurer James Johnson doing the honors.
DiSanto replaces Paul Duquette who served as chief for 15 years.
NEWPORT CITY – After being vacant for several months, the former Landing Clothing store on Main Street will have a tenant.
Building owner Tony Pomerleau said yesterday that Mill River Furniture will move into the downtown location from the Waterfront Plaza, which Pomerleau also owns.
Pomerleau has owned the downtown location for less than a year.
NEWPORT - New blooms of Cyanobacteria (known as “blue-green algae”) were spotted on the Canadian side of Lake Memphremagog several times recently. The blooms covered a large area and were spotted in several locations.
Memphremagog Conservation Inc. photos from July show a thick, scum-like, bright greenish-blue substance on the water.
Cyanobacteria blooms are of serious concern because they could be toxic and harm humans or animals who bath or swim in the water or who drink it. Cyanobacteria is found worldwide and is most prevalent in clam-nutrient rich waters. (World Health Organization)
