BARTON – Erma Hathaway is bright, talkative and sharp as a tack. Hathaway, a resident at Maple Lane Nursing Home, celebrated her 102nd birthday Thursday, Aug. 30.
Hathaway was born in Delaware County in New York State. As a little girl she worked hard. Hathaway, who grew up on a farm, learned to milk cows at an early age. Her family had 60 Jersey cows.
“I ran the milking machine,” said Hathaway. “That was my job principally.”
Hathaway mostly milked in the evening, but did the morning chores when her family needed her.
DERBY – A petition is now circulating around the Town of Derby calling for a special meeting to elect an interim town clerk and treasurer.
Long-time Derby Town Clerk and Treasurer Nicole Daigle notified the select board in July that she had found a new job but planned to stay on in her position for a while to help with a transition.
She also said she found someone to train for her duties so that, come election time, there would be a “viable, trained candidate."
DERBY – After three and a half years, Brenda LePage, owner of Brenda’s Restaurant, is moving her business from the Derby Road in Derby to Main Street in Newport City.
LePage opened Brenda’s after a 15 year hiatus in the restaurant business. For 10 years, she owned LePage’s, a popular breakfast and lunch spot, in Newport. This time, LePage is moving to the site of the former Junior’s Restaurant, which is down the street from her old stomping grounds. LePage didn’t want to move to her former Newport location, even though it's vacant, because it was too expensive to maintain.
