ATTENTION SHOPPERS

DERBY – Local Walmart proponents are seeing some light at the end of the tunnel on getting their very own big box store.
“Everything is squared away,” said Sen. Robert Starr of North Troy.
Walmart and property owner Jeff Davis of Burlington are happy, Starr said.
Starr is organizing a formal announcement for sometime in early to mid-January. Local and state officials will take part in the announcement, which will most likely take place on the Newport-Derby line.
"Hopefully, it will keep money from going to New Hampshire,” Starr said.

Freedom to Chalk

December 23, 2012

NEWPORT CITY – Sometimes writing on city sidewalks isn't child’s play. That's the message the court sent Diane Peel, Jack Rogers and Tom Farrow when it ordered them to pay a fine of $50 apiece for doing just that.
Friday morning, Lamoille County Assistant Judge Karen Bradley handed down the fines.
During an interview last summer, Peel said she wrote things like: “Big Corporations don’t care about your health, buy local,” “Support Community Gardens,” “It’s your town, take control,” and “What would you like to see on Main Street?” with an arrow pointing to an empty storefront.

GUN SALES JUMP

December 20, 2012

DERBY - Local retailers Mr. O's and Wright's Enterprises have seen an increase in sales of firearms including assault weapons after the horrific rampage in Newtown, CT, last week.
Nationwide, the surge in sales culminates a year in which the FBI ran 16.8 million background checks for gun buyers, the most ever. Sales skyrocketed the Friday following the November 6 election, breaking all-time records and crashing the FBI's NICS background check system.
Now, following the shooting of 20 school children and 6 adults, gun sales of all types are again spiking.

Dave Hallquist, the CEO of VEC, said in an interview Thursday that if the board of directors decides on the moratorium, it should include solar as well to prevent driving up the cost on energy.
Hallquist said it troubles him that wind projects are tearing communities apart. “I hate to see this level of angst.”

The schools will distribute the toys to families of children who might otherwise get little or nothing during Christmas. The children can receive the gifts from Santa, their parents or others.
Law enforcement officers from all local agencies, state police dispatchers, Department of Correction Officers, first responders and local citizens helped cover the cost of the toys.

The NCU Junior High School Board is concerned about the community response to the proposed budget increase. At the November meeting, board member Richard Nelson wondered, “What effect does the 14% increase in our health care budget have on our overall increase in the budget proposal?” This week the answer was quantified by BC/BS actuaries.
