MCCLURE RELEASED ON BAIL

NEWPORT CITY – In the early morning hours of Oct. 24, Newport City Police Officer Richard Wells found Brent McClure, 23, of North Troy, allegedly pursuing Wells.

VERMONT REACHES OUT TO NEIGHBORS - SCHOOL REOPENS

NEWPORT CITY - For the past several days, emergency officials intently watch as hybrid storm Sandy makes its way up the East Coast, leaving footprints of mass destruction and devastation. 
Sandy spared the Green Mountain State as Vermonters sighed in relief. Wind speeds in the Northeast Kingdom included 38-miles per hour at Caledonia County Airport at 11:55 p.m. Monday. Walden had 37-miles per hour wind at 2:56 Monday afternoon. The Newport State Airport reported 35-miles per hour wind at 3:55 pm Monday.

NEK HUNKERS DOWN - SCHOOLS CLOSED

WATERBURY – A state of emergency remained in affected Monday as Vermonters hunkered down and waited for the arrival of hybrid storm Sandy.
The state emergency operations center started opening around 7 a.m. Monday and was fully opened by noon. The Department of Public Safety (DPS) held a telephone conference with the mayors throughout the state to get ideas on their community’s preparations and what, if anything, the DPS could do to assist them. DPS also held a telephone conference with various legislators to obtain input on any identifiable needs in their communities.

SYKES FACES SHOOTING CHARGE

NEWPORT CITY – Twenty-four-year-old Lee Sykes of Island Pond appeared in court Monday sporting a shiner as he entered a not guilty plea to a charge of assault with a weapon, specifically a 40 caliber pistol. Sykes is charged with shooting Eric Baker, 35, at a party held in Charleston.
Judge Howard VanBenthuysen ordered Sykes held on $25,000 bail.
Around 1 AM Sunday, state police responded to a shooting at a residence on VT RT 105 in Charleston. When police arrived, a group of people pushed Skyes against the cruiser and said he had shot Eric Baker.

Woman Charged with Gun Smuggling in Derby Line

BURLINGTON, VT – A Florida woman was indicted Friday on charges of smuggling firearms into Canada from Vermont. The woman, Annette Wexler, 46, allegedly used the Haskell Free Library in Derby Line for the operation.
The Haskell Library straddles the international border and can be accessed by both U.S. and Canadian residents without going through customs.

STORM WARNING: GOVERNOR DECLARES STATE OF EMERGENCY

NEWPORT CITY – Gov. Peter Shumlin has declared a state of emergency for Vermont following reports from the National Weather Service that Hurricane Sandy, which has now merged with two other storms to create what's being called a "superstorm," is headed up the coast.
Forecasters say Sandy will continue to travel up the eastern part of the United States today.

JROTC Receives High Award

NEWPORT, VT - For the 12th year in a row, the North Country Union High School JROTC program has received the Honor Unit with Distinction award given by the U.S. Army.
This is a unit award given to some of the best schools in the nation. The award is only given to schools that can handle a full inspection and get at least a 90 percent in drill and ceremony, color guard, a full staff briefing, and a full battalion formation inspection.

Utilities prepare for superstorm

VERMONT – Local utility companies and those across the northeast and eastern seaboard are preparing for the behemoth storm predicted to hit with fury over the next few days.
The Northeast Kingdom and other areas of Vermont are under a high wind warning beginning Monday afternoon and continuing into Tuesday morning. In Vermont, winds are predicted to gust up to 60 miles per hour, and up to 80 mph in the western slopes of the Green Mountains and at higher elevations, above 2,000 feet.

LOWELL - An armored truck took out a utility pole and rolled onto its side before bursting into flames in Lowell yesterday.
The Vermont State Police, the Lowell Fire Department, and other responders were called to this rollover Thursday morning.
State police say Eric Jones, 43, of Burlington, was driving this Loomis Armored Truck on Route 100 in Lowell when he lost control, went off the east side of the roadway and collided with a utility pole before coming to a rest on the passenger side of the vehicle.
The engine then burst into flames. The driver escaped.

SMASH AND RUN

NEWPORT CENTER, VT - Police arrested a Derby man after he allegedly used his vehicle to ram the personal vehicle of an off duty police officer before leading police on a high speed chase.
Police said that early Wednesday morning, Brent McClure, 23, of Derby, targeted Newport City Police Officer Richard Wells' personal vehicle. McClure rammed Wells' vehicle several times along VT RT 105, causing Wells to temporarily lose control of his vehicle.
