NORTH TROY – Voters went to the polls for a third time to vote on a $1.07 million bond to make renovations to the school, and rejected it by a vote of 92-84. For over a year, school officials and board members have maintained the argument that renovations are necessary. However, voters didn’t buy it and rejected the bond, sending board members back to the drawing board.
The actual construction now is about $890,000. The school board added $182,000 for contingency costs. However, board members hoped they wouldn’t need the extra money.
DERBY – Derby Select Board member Karen Jenne has taken out petitions for Derby  Clerk, town treasurer, and school treasurer. She has also taken petitions out for the Derby select board for both two- and three-year terms. Jenne’s seat on the board is up for grabs at Town Meeting in March.
However Jenne is keeping a tight lid on which petition she is circulating for signatures. She says she will make a public announcement soon. The deadline for filing is January 28 and 30 signatures from registered voters are required.
NEWPORT – Rick Burroughs and Heidi Davis of Black River Designs (BRD) gave an overview Wednesday evening of the facility needs for North Country Union High School's A and B wings to an advisory committee composed of school administrators, school board members, and members of the community. BRD worked with the high school board for the North Country Career Center renovation known as C Wing.
The overview is based on a master planning effort by BRD, which focused on facility needs, code compliance, and educational issues.
