NEWPORT CITY - The Newport man who stood on his roof with a gun, while an army of law enforcement officers cleared the neighborhood and worked to bring him down was found competent to stand trial. Derick Niles, 36, of Newport City was returned to the Northern State Correctional Facility Tuesday for a lack of $100,000 bail.
A report given to the court stated that Niles is competent. Neither State's Attorney Alan Franklin nor public defender Janssen Willhoit argued with the report.
