November 12, 2013

BRIGHTON — At a meeting Monday of the board of governors for the Unified Towns and Gores of Essex County (UTG), very few residents and landowners of the UTG were actually in attendance, though the gymnasium at the town hall in Brighton was crowded. What easily could have turned into a mob scene given the hot topic of wind power on the meeting agenda, behavior of the attendees may have been tempered by the visible presence of four armed officers including Essex County Sheriff Trevor Colby, two of his deputies and Brighton PD Chief Jeff Noyes.

Do wind turbines harm property values?

November 12, 2013

LOWELL - A Lowell resident says his property has lost value because of its proximity to the wind turbine development on the ridgeline near his house. Kevin McGrath owns a home within a half of a mile of Green Mountain Power’s (GMP) Kingdom Community Wind development on Lowell Mountain. McGrath’s property is one of the closest to the turbines. He had just finished building his home and making his property just as he had always wanted when the turbine project began. He works out of the area and when he returns he is often disturbed by the noise, he said.

New Local Bakery offers Something for Everyone

November 10, 2013

NEWPORT – A group of students sat down at tables Saturday and observed bowls of frosting, cupcakes, and several tools and contraptions before them. The kids looked curiously at the display. Within two hours each child had created a variety of different designs with borders, flowers and other shapes made completely out of frosting. The group was taking part in a cake decorating class at All About the Cake, a cheerful place on East Main Street with an ambiance that resembles an old fashion “soda fountain” and bake shop with modern amenities.
