CLIMBING THE MOUNTAIN

NEWPORT CITY – Proposed business and residential development in the greater Newport area has delighted many people, but others are concerned about the negative effects.
Nick Ecker Racz of Glover told lawmakers and other officials during a public hearing held at the North Country Career Center Tuesday that the development will bring in more money, which means more illegal drugs.

MARY ANN TETREAULT: NEW IDEAS

DERBY – Just about one year ago, Mary Ann Tetreault defeated former Derby Town Clerk and Treasurer Nicole Daigle in a bid for the delinquent tax collector position. And the year has gone pretty good for Tetreault, she said in a recent interview.

CITY ALDERMEN RUN UNOPPOSED

NEWPORT CITY – Two familiar names will be on the ballot for alderman on Town Meeting Day. Denis Chenette and Dick Baraw are both running unopposed for their seats.

Chenette has served the council since 2009, prior to that he served on the Newport City Zoning Board for 25 years. He was also on a committee to encourage new business in the city.

GRANT SPATES: LOOKING AHEAD

DERBY – Local businessman Grant Spates is an experienced member of many different boards and now he would like to be a member of the Derby Select Board. Long-time member Karen Jenne has opted to not seek re-election for a three-year seat, leaving an open place.
In a recent interview, Spates was critical of some of Jenne’s actions as a board member. Jenne was an opponent of the proposed industrial-sized wind turbines on two farms in town.

MAC GALLERY FULL OF SNOW AND ICE

NEWPORT, VT - The MAC Center for the Arts on Main Street in Newport hosted a wine and cheese opening for their latest bi-monthly exhibit, “Snow and Ice,” Friday. Jim McKimm, creative director of the center, described it as “a history of winter sports in the area, which includes Newport, North Troy, and Jay Peak.” The story is told by old photos, stories, skis, and snowshoes contributed by 10 local artists.

VICKY FARRAND-LEWIS: COMMUNITY VOICES MATTER

DERBY - Vicky Farrand-Lewis is seeking a three-year seat on the Derby Select Board, a position that has opened up after long-time member Karen Jenne decided to run for the town clerk and treasurer position instead.
Lewis began attending more town meetings and speaking up when the town was discussing the proposal to erect industrial sized turbines on Derby Line farms. Lewis supports a moratorium on future wind developments because she feels more research is needed on their effects on surrounding areas.

CARNIVAL!

NEWPORT CITY – This year's Winter Carnival was all about fireworks and ice.
The Newport Recreation Department sponsored the event that took place in Gardner Park Saturday.
The day started with three teams battling to the finish in the Orleans County Citizen Advocacy Winter Golf Challenge. The team SSMC, which consisted of a foursome from Haverhill, N.H. came in first place. Rusty's Electric came in second place and the team from Passumpsic Savings Bank came in third place.
