DERBY BOARD: NEW TONE, NEW RULES

DERBY – In an effort to prevent the kind of turmoil prevalent at the Derby Select Board meetings over the last year, the board decided to adopt Roberts Rules of Order as the format for their public meetings and move all public comments and questions to the first part of the meeting.
The concept was supported by newly elected member Grant Spates, who said at a previous meeting that it works well at other meetings he attends. Over the last year or more, the town faced some very heated controversial discussions.

CITY RENAMES BALL FIELD

NEWPORT CITY – After decades, the youth baseball field at Gardner Park now has an official name. It has been informally known as the Cal Ripken Field.
The city council approved the request to name the field The Gary Rowe Youth Baseball Field. Rowe dedicated many hours to youth sports in the city and surrounding area. The council named the field three years to the day of Rowe's death.
A sign identifying the field will hang below the scoreboard. Jack Roberge, who represented the Newport Cal Ripken Baseball League, is providing the sign at no cost.  

LAKE REGION TACKLES STUDENT MOTIVATION

ORLEANS – The Lake Region Union High School Board recently tackled the issues of students dropping out of school and/or not finishing their graduation requirements. Some seniors are struggling to graduate despite having good grades during their high school years, while others just give up.
Principal Andre Messier said a lot of people at the school are doing “whatever we can” to get them to graduate.
