WINGS TAKES FLIGHT

August 8, 2013

COVENTRY – The final walk through is near as the new Wings restaurant and bar opens today in Coventry at the Newport Airport. Cavan Meese, one of the business’s driving forces and co-owners, has not slept much the last few days as the operation gets ready for its kickoff. Meese said, "It’s still a lot of running around and getting final things done.”

LRUHS: MAKING SCHOOL SAFE

Vt. border crossing has system outages

August 8, 2013

ST. ALBANS, Vt. (AP) — U.S. Customs officials say the Highgate Springs port of entry in Vermont is experiencing system outages and delays crossing the border are expected.
Passenger and commercial vehicles are being told to seek other border crossing in Vermont or use the Champlain, N.Y., crossing.
U.S. Customs and Border Protection says it's working with local, state and federal agencies to fix the system.

FIRE AT FASTENAL

August 7, 2013

A storage area for the Fastenal store located at Newport Industrial Park on Derby Road was the scene of an electrical fire Wednesday evening. The Newport City Fire Department quickly responded.

ROYAL LIPIZZANS IN BARTON

August 7, 2013

BARTON – For Rebecca McCullough, traveling the United States with a dozen thoroughbred horses is a way of life. And after a seven year absence from the Green Mountain State, her company, Herrmann's Lipizzan Stallions troupe makes a stop at the Orleans County fairgrounds in Barton for several shows beginning this Friday night. The beautiful white long maned animals, all males, are fine tuned and well trained as they prepare for some 125 shows a year.

CHURCH ADDITION BREAKS GROUND

August 7, 2013

MORGAN – A recent ground breaking ceremony marked the beginning of an addition to the 170-year-old Morgan Church. A fundraising request already raised $105,000 in the past year, exceeding the goal of $100,000. Building chairman John Gobeil of Derby said all the permits are in place and construction is expected to begin any day now.

MAPLESFIELDS EYES NEWPORT

August 6, 2013

NEWPORT CITY – RL Vallee Inc. has submitted a proposal to replace the One Stop Mini Mart and Memphremagog Rentals building with a national franchise, Maplefields. The Essex Junction based business will take down the existing structures and replace them with a multi-level building and a canopied gas pump area.

YOUTH REVITALIZE SKATE PARK

August 6, 2013

NEWPORT, VT – This summer, area youth get the opportunity to help out their community while learning valuable job skills as part of a federally funded summer program called Supportive Services for Rural Homeless Youth (SSRHY). The task is to rebuild Gardner Park’s skate park, which was previously unsafe and in disrepair. Those involved in the program not only benefit from the skate park but learn how to build it as well.

NEW DRIVE THRU

August 6, 2013

A vehicle managed to drive onto the sidewalk of the Waterfront Plaza and scrape up against the wall outside the drugstore yesterday afternoon. No report was available as of press time, but crews had fun dragging the vehicle back up the walkway and around the damaged support poles.

ROLLOVER IN MORGAN

August 6, 2013

Jared Stevens, 18, of Bushkill, PA, apparently fell asleep at the wheel of his 2013 Honda Civic on VT RT 111 in Morgan and flipped the car, totaling it. Stevens and a passenger were both wearing seatbelts and were not seriously injured. The vehicle was towed away by Grenier's Auto of West Charleston. Derby Line Ambulance, Charleston Fire Department and Vermont Electric Co-op all responded to the scene. The accident occurred Monday.
