‘I Heart Newport’ Creator Speaks Out

NEWPORT CITY - “I don’t think an outsider just lands here, I think we’re chosen to be here,” Beth Barnes told the Newport Rotary Club Tuesday. “I think we all have something to bring to this community.”
The original purpose of the Facebook page was so Barnes’ friends and family around the world could keep track of her. Her page soon became well known. As of Tuesday, it had 134 followers. Barnes started making posts about things other sources were not reporting or discussing.

Village Pizza Open for Business

“Closed due to Fire” reads a neon green sign on the door of the Village Pizza Restaurant in Orleans. This sign has greeted visitors for a little more than three months, but that will change within the next week, and the lounge is already open for business.

Honoring Those Who Served

NEWPORT CITY - Americans paused yesterday as they marked the anniversary of the ending of World War I.
In Newport City, ceremonies included a program at the municipal building and the dedication of the newly rebuilt Long Bridge now known as the Veterans Memorial Long Bridge in honor of all veterans.

Little People Helping in a Big Way

DERBY - "They're little people with big hearts," said local Scout leader Paul Snider. He was referring to the scouts' efforts of collecting food for the Northeast Kingdom Community Action (NEKCA) food shelf. "That's a big thing."

New Local Bakery offers Something for Everyone

NEWPORT – A group of students sat down at tables Saturday and observed bowls of frosting, cupcakes, and several tools and contraptions before them. The kids looked curiously at the display. Within two hours each child had created a variety of different designs with borders, flowers and other shapes made completely out of frosting. The group was taking part in a cake decorating class at All About the Cake, a cheerful place on East Main Street with an ambiance that resembles an old fashion “soda fountain” and bake shop with modern amenities.

Barton Solar Farm Submits Application

BARTON- Robert Grant, Project Manager for the proposed Barton Solar Farm project has submitted an application before the Vermont Public Service Board for a Certificate of Public Good. The proposed farm will be located on the Ducharme property in the Town of Barton. The 25 acre lot is located east of Route 16, less than a mile from Exit 25 off Interstate 91. Barton Solar, LLC plans on installing a 1.89 megawatt photovoltaic generation facility off the Glover Road with the capacity to serve 500 residential homes.

Imery's Talc Delaware Seeks To Put Talc Mine On Mothballs

NEWPORT CITY - The Act 250 Board went into recess Wednesday evening while the owners of a talc mine work out some details for The Agency of Natural Resources. The mine is located near the Loop Road in Troy.                                           
Because of a low market, the owners of the talc mine stopped working the property 20 or so years ago. Now officials from Imery's Talc Delaware Inc. based in Ludlow want temporary reclamation of the mine until they decide what to do with it.

Derby Walmart Getting Closer

DERBY - Vermont's downtowns got a boost Wednesday and as an added bonus, at least in the eyes of some people, two groups who are strongly against Walmart outside of towns say they will not oppose a large super center off the Derby Road.

Supermedia LLC vs Spates The Florist

NEWPORT CITY- A civil lawsuit filed by Supermedia LLC versus Four Green Thumbs Inc. (Spates the Florist) is tentatively set for trial on December 5th. The lawsuit involves non payment of advertising services performed by Idearc Media, predecessor to Supermedia.

Old Newberry's Building Sold

NEWPORT CITY - Local business developer Bill Stenger, owner of Jay Peak Resort, is in the process of purchasing the former J.J. Newberry's Building on Main Street.
