BOND NEEDED FOR HEAVY RESCUE TRUCK

September 4, 2013

NEWPORT CITY – Fire Chief Jamie LeClair will ask the city council Monday evening to hold a special bond vote to buy a new heavy rescue truck. The city purchased the existing truck, a used 1987 Pierce, 10 years ago. It carries equipment and firefighters to scenes. However, the truck is aging, is not reliable, and needs extensive repairs. The truck has 226,000 miles and 107,000 hours of driving on it. If it were a traditional over-the-road vehicle, it would have over a million miles, LeClair said.

Visitors coming from Canada sometimes wait about a half hour or more at the North Troy Port of Entry on their way to the resort. Just over half of skiers at Jay Peak are from Canada, resort co-owner Bill Stenger reports. Stenger attempted to enter the pilot program, even though it would have cost him thousands to pay for more customs officers.
