HOSPITAL CUTS STAFF

July 9, 2013

North Country Hospital has announced that it is cutting 19 positions, reducing hours for some employees and closing two clinical services, due to financial difficulties. Island Pond’s Cardboard Boat Race: A Traditional Part of July 4th Events

Island Pond, VT–– Sunday, July 7th, a half dozen brave teams competed against each other in a paddling race on the waterfront in Island Pond as part of the Independence Day weekend celebration. Instead of kayaks or canoes, however, their boats were made of cardboard!

Louis Garneau Ready To Build

DERBY– Louis Garneau is planning to build a new $8-million facility on the Derby Road within the next few weeks. Company officials made the announcement at a press conference Monday morning that included Louis Garneau, his family, the general manager, Governor Peter Shumlin, a couple of local dignitaries, and others.

No Rest For Aquafest Bed Racers

The Newport Parks and Recreation team go head-to-head against The Newport Ambulance Service during the bed races in Gardner Park Thursday. Newport Parks and Recreation walked away as the over all winners.

USA: HAPPY BIRTHDAY

DERBY–– People lined up on both sides of the street from the Elks Club in Derby all the way down Main Street for its annual July 4th parade. Onlookers were not disappointed as the parade was about an hour an half long and the sun kept on shining.

Police Identify Westfield Murder Victim

WESTFIELD - Police say the man killed on Fuller Road earlier this week is 61-year-old George Kouzoujian.

Homicide Investigation in Westfield

July 2, 2013

Westfield, VT –– On July 2 at approximately 12:49 a.m., the Vermont State Police received a call from the Jasper County Sheriff’s Department regarding a Vermont resident who was pulled over in Indiana on a traffic violation. The sheriff’s deputy advised that during the course traffic stop the operator, identified as Peter Lavalette, age 49 of Derby, indicated he was involved in a homicide in Vermont.

Persistence Pays Off

The 2013 celebration of graduation for Northeast Kingdom Learning Services students, as well as their friends and family, was held Thursday evening, June 27, 2013 in the newly remodeled Dancing Sail Banquet room at the Eastside Restaurant. Markus Vogt, NEKLS Newport Community Learning Center Manager, opened the ceremony. Mr. Vogt made special mention and a moment of silence was held to honor the passing of a long time NEKLS employee, Jack Stouffer.

Former Circus Smirkus Performer Hits Big Time

NEW ORLEANS - Anyone watching the television program "America's Got Talent" Tuesday, June 11 may have seen a familiar face. Former Newport resident Sam Johnson, who worked with Circus Smirkus as a teenager, did a handstand on an 80-foot pole.
