Newport City Council Approves Municipal Budget With $50K In Cuts

NEWPORT CITY - Monday evening, the Newport City Council approved the fiscal year 2014-2015 municipal budget, about $3 million. City voters have the opportunity to either accept or reject the budget on Town Meeting Day March 4.
The budget is 0.012 percent higher than the current budget and includes the cost of hiring a new police officer.

Junior High School Board Approves Level Funded Budget

UTG Vote Against Wind Causes Unexpected Result

Landowner Says He Will Post His Land

FERDINAND — The long-awaited results from the taxpaying landowners of the Unified Towns and Gores were finally tallied and released to the public on Monday evening during the regularly monthly scheduled meeting of the UTG Board at their municipal office in Ferdinand.

The final result was 170 voted against industrial wind development while only 107 voted in favor of wind development. The board of governors has said repeatedly they will stand behind the voters and support whatever the majority decides to do.

NCUJHS Bond Hearing Poorly Attended

DERBY CENTER - A public information meeting Monday to review a bond proposal by the North Country Union Junior High School board was poorly attended. In spite of the lack of public interest consultants Rob Favali and John Alden of the architectural firm Dubois and King provided an overview of their recommendations to the board.

UTG Taxpayers Reject Seneca Mountain Wind In Non-Binding Survey

FD Pumps A Foot Of Water From Derby Line Basement

DERBY LINE – A basement in a Derby Line home flooded rapidly Saturday evening. The fire department and others responded to help pump out the water and channel the newly formed river of flood waters elsewhere.

Two Schools Holding Information Meetings Tonight

DERBY - North Country Union Junior High School and Holland Elementary School will hold information meetings tonight (Monday) to provide an overview of the proposed bonds each school is seeking. The junior high meeting will begin at 7 p.m., following a school board meeting to review and approve the next fiscal year’s budget proposal. Voters will have an opportunity to approve or reject the bond request on January 21.
Holland school’s meeting will begin at 6 p.m. with a vote scheduled for January 14.

Former Newport Dockmaster Gets Jail In Sex Case Involving Young Girls

NEWPORT CITY - John Kuhl, 42, the former Newport City dockmaster, was sentenced to serve five years in federal prison for making a young girl take pictures of her own private parts on a cell phone he had given her in 2011.
