School Boards Have Lots Of Questions For Legislators

BARTON - An upcoming Legislature/educator summit to be held at Lake Region Union High School on March 31 has school board members ready to ask questions and offer opinions. The summit brings together the area legislative delegation and school board members from both Orleans Central and North Country supervisory unions to discuss pending legislation and ongoing governance and finance issues.

Local Maple Producers Open Sugarhouse Doors

It was a sweet weekend in the state as hundreds of maple syrup producers opened their doors for the annual maple open house weekend.
Maple production so far has been sluggish, which prompted some of the producers to cancel their activities, but things were really cooking for those who continued on with their scheduled activities.

Petition Circulating On Proposed Bylaw Change In DL Village

Vietnam War Veterans To Be Honored In Montpelier

Local Residents Give Input About State Stun Gun Policy

DERBY – Local residents Thursday evening had an opportunity to give their input about a statewide policy regarding the use of conducted electrical weapons (CEWs) by law enforcement officers. The comments will help the state’s Law Enforcement Advisory Board develop a model policy.

Supreme Court Hears Seneca Mountain Wind Appeal

NEWARK - An appeal of the Public Service Board’s (PSB) ruling against Newark Neighbors United (NNU) request was heard by the Vermont Supreme Court recently. The towns of Brighton and Newark joined NNU to appeal a Certificate of Public Good issued by the PSB allowing Eolian Renewable Energy Development to site four meteorological towers in three Essex County towns.

Dunkin’ Donuts Interested In Derby Commercial Corridor

Dunkin’ Donuts, a worldwide outlet in baked goods and coffee is showing interest in opening a store in Derby. According to Derby Zoning Administrator Bob Kelley, the chain has inquired about leasing land on the Derby Road near a furniture store.

DL Trustees, Derby Select Board Working On Solution — Select Board Worried About Potential Lawsuit

The Derby select board took the Derby Line trustees by surprised by not accepting the changes the trustees wanted in their village. The Derby select board declined to approve a bylaw amendment that would remove “Auto Service Station/Mini Mart” as a conditional use in the village commercial zoning district, and prohibit commercial establishments from having drive-through windows in the commercial area.
Brian Smith, chairman of the Derby select board, said Thursday that he favors the bylaw amendment, but is concerned about legal action.

Junior High Board Optimistic Following Bond Passage

DERBY CENTER - Meeting for the first time since passage of a $1.9 million bond, the North Country Union Junior High School board expressed its gratitude to the voters.

Derby Line Trustees Outraged With Select Board

March 19, 2014

The Derby Line trustees are angry that the Derby select board declined at its Monday meeting to approve a bylaw amendment that the trustees were working hard to pass. The Derby planning commission had already approved the move.
