West Side School Committee Prepares For Vote

January 29, 2014

DERBY CENTER – North Country Supervisory Union Superintendent Robert Kern has announced a Feb. 13 date for the committee studying the possibility of creating a west side middle school to hold a vote. The committee has been studying “grade configuration,” examining a lack of physical space, and limited programs for elementary students on the west side of Orleans County.

Border Survey Helps Canada Understand Foreign Spending

DERBY LINE - Anyone crossing into Canada from the United States last Saturday may have received a survey from Canadian border officers.
Statistics Canada conducts the international travel survey to determine the amount of money Canadians spend in other countries and the amount foreign travelers, including Americans, spend in Canada.

Arsonist Avoids Prison Following Conviction

NEWPORT CITY – A Barton woman who pleaded guilty to burning down a camp owned by a police informant after her boyfriend and his brother were arrested in a drug bust was issued a three-year deferred sentence Tuesday for first degree arson.

Neighbor Sues First Wind Over Sheffield Wind Project

SHEFFIELD – Paul Brouha’s parents fled Germany during the WWII era and settled in Vermont for the peace, tranquility, natural beauty and quiet enjoyment it offered. When Brouha was born he was brought to the Sutton home he continues to live in to this day.

Brouha has filed suit in Caledonia Superior Court against Vermont Wind, Northeast Wind Partners II, and First Wind Holdings over the Sheffield Wind Project.

Local Lawmakers Split On Legalizing Marijuana

Derby Town Plan Ready For Voter Approval

January 26, 2014

DERBY - On Wednesday, January 22 the Derby select board held the second of two public hearings for residents to ask questions and make comments regarding the proposed new town plan. Following a short discussion following the hearing the select board unanimously agreed to send the proposal to voters on Town Meeting Day. The vote will be by Australian ballot.

NCH ‘Holding Hands’ With Change

The focus of North Country Hospital’s (NCH) annual meeting Thursday at the East Side Restaurant was on its many accomplishments and change. The hospital has been in the news lately for some problems it is dealings with like the OSHA violations, and layoffs, among others, but there were many accomplishments over the past year.
