Fundraiser For Mary Wright Halo Foundation

The Ladies League in cooperation with the Newport Country Club, led by Carol Needleman and Martha Fortin are organizing the first annual golf, BBQ, and dance to benefit the Halo Foundation. The date is Saturday, August 23rd, and features a two person scramble, and three divisions (men, women, and mixed).  A putting contest will start at 11:30 a.m., and a shotgun start for the tournament begins at 1:30 p.m.

Memorial Concert Planned for Homicide Victim

Island Pond–– The family and friends of homicide victim Isaac Hunt are planning a public celebration of his life.  Mary Hunt, of Island Pond, said that a memorial concert for her brother is planned for 7 p.m. at Pavilion Park in Island Pond, on Saturday, August 16, weather permitting.  The event will include a paper lantern lighting, and the family has created decals and wristbands in Isaac’s memory, which will be on sale during the concert.

Maple Company Interested in Old Furniture Plant

BRIGHTON- Rick DeWolf of DeWolf Engineering, along with the Town’s Development Review Board participated in a site visit at the former Ethan Allen plant on Wednesday afternoon.  Sweet Tree Processing (STP) of New Haven, CT. is interested in using the site for a maple syrup production plant in town.  Of interest are lighting, parking, landscaping and snow removal, as well as location of appropriate signage.  The DRB later met to review the proposal and will issue findings of facts and any conditions necessary before granting approval.

Act 250 Issues Recess Order for AnC Bio

The District Environmental  Commission has recessed the hearing on the AnC Bio application and is asking for additional information.
 On July 21 the Act 250  Commission held a public hearing on the application for a biotechnology campus on Bogner Drive in Newport City, proposed by Bill Stenger of Jay Peak and his business partners. The facility would manufacture artificial organs like dialysis machines, and conduct cutting edge research.

Derby Line Man Faces Life in Prison

NEWPORT CITY – A Derby Line man faces a life sentence after he pled guilty to repeated aggravated sexual assault.
The man, 65-year-old Robert Stacey, also faces a consecutive five to 15 year prison sentence for a charge of Lewd and Lascivious Conduct with a Child. In exchange for Stacey pleading guilty to the felony charges, in Orleans Country Superior Court Criminal Division Tuesday, the state dropped a felony charge of attempting to obstruct justice.

Fundraiser for Local 3 Year Old Fighting Cancer

COVENTRY– A three year old Derby Line girl is battling a rare form of leukemia. A fundraiser for her and the family is being held Saturday, August 2 beginning at 7 p.m. at Parker Pie Wings on the Airport Road. There will be live music and a variety of other entertainment.
