Market Reopens In Newport

NEWPORT CITY - Renee and Corey Fortin opened the Westside Market on Highland Avenue this week. It’s the location of the former Ray’s Market that closed earlier this year.

Lowell Wind Opponents Appeal ANR Stormwater Permit To Supreme Court

LOWELL – Despite the recent verdict by the Vermont Supreme Court on the Lowell Mountain wind opponents’ unlawful trespassing appeal, the advocates are continuing their crusade. This time the non-profit energy advocacy group Energize Vermont, along with neighbors of the Lowell wind project, have made another appeal to the high court.

Eden Woman Sees Sentence Deferred For Stabbing Estranged Husband

NEWPORT CITY – An Eden woman was handed a seven-and-a-half-year deferred sentence on Thursday, Dec. 5 after she pleaded guilty to first degree assault with a deadly weapon. A charge of second degree attempted murder against 41-year-old Jennifer Ahlquist was dropped.

Wanted: Toys, Toys and More Toys

NEWPORT CITY - Some area children will have a bright shinny gift under the tree Christmas morning, thanks to Northeast Kingdom Community Action (NEKCA).
Rhonda Cole, teen parent educator at NEKCA, is heading up the Toys for Kids of Vermont campaign. NEKCA started collecting toys Nov. 15.

National Store Keeps Local Residents Employed at Manufacturing Plant

NEWPORT CITY - Many people believe that big box stores hurt local economies, but one national retailer is helping to keep area residents off the unemployment line.
Glenn Foster, plant manager for Columbia Forest Products in Newport, said 25 percent of his company’s business is making hardwood veneer for merchandise sold by retailers like Home Depot.

Suzie-Lynn’s Gifts and Half-Off Cards

NEWPORT CITY - A few years ago Lisa Desroches was working at the Pick and Shovel and talked to her husband about starting their own business. As luck would have it Suzie-Lynn’s Gifts became available for sale in 2011 and Desroches took the leap from employee to business owner.

Irockets ‘Rise Like Phoenix’

NEWPORT CITY - The Irockets swim team is resilient, to say the least, with iron-willed swimmers overcoming obstacles to participate in the sport they love. In 2005 the now defunct recreational facility known as IROC opened, featuring a field house and swimming pool. The pool was sized to allow for competitive swim meets, which inspired Dr. Peter Stuart and other swim enthusiasts to start a team to introduce the sport to area youth. The sport grew in popularity such that by the time IROC closed in the spring of 2013 there were 34 kids who were part of the Irockets team.

Newport Business Helps Local Officer Be Safe

HARDWICK - Thanks to a Newport business owner, Hardwick’s Police Department’s K9, Atos, recently became a bit safer while performing his duties.
This past fall, Atos became the owner of a bullet and stab protective vest thanks to Claire Beaulieu, owner of Claire’s Home Comfort Cleaning.
Beaulieu paid $950 for the vest after reading about them in the newspaper.
“To me these dogs need to be vested,” said Beaulieu. “They’re protecting our officers.”
