December 11th
NEWPORT CITY – Americans across the country took time to recognize World War II Veterans, also known as the Greatest Generation. Saturday, about a dozen area residents gathered in the Veterans of Foreign Wars Alfred Pepin Post #798 to honor the veterans from that era.
Holding such events is important so nobody forgets what happened on Dec. 7, 1941, said Floyd Ellis, post commander. “I was just a child at the time. I can just imagine what they went through.”
World War II veterans are rapidly dying and soon they will become a thing of the past, said Post Trustee Rick Kelley.
December 8th
NEWPORT, VT - Area artists and artisans have been busy creating paintings on eight-foot tall panels to enhance the Community Christmas Dinner.
Tim Daley, who is the host and producer of the event, had a vision to make this year's dinner spectacular. Working in collaboration with the Wooden Horse Arts Guild, well known artist Adrien "Yellow" Patenaude of Newport, a host of volunteer artists, the Area Agency on Aging, and area businesses, the vision is becoming a reality.
NEWPORT CITY – Another new restaurant will soon grace downtown Newport, making the Main Street area the place to be for good food. Scott and Lisa Shipley will open the Habanero’s Mexican Grille at 8 a.m. today. It is located at the former Peeking Garden Chinese Restaurant.
Scott, originally from southern California, said he wanted to experience a different way of life. Back in California, he was a real-estate broker. “I got tired of doing that,” he said. “I decided to take my savings, come up here and open a restaurant. I love cooking and I always wanted to own a restaurant.”

NEWPORT TOWN – Newport Center Fire Chief Kurk Flynn has high praise for the firefighters who prevented a possible explosion at a camp on the Clark Mountain Road yesterday. Firefighters responded to a fully engulfed structure at around 1:30 p.m. Flynn immediately requested mutual aid from Newport City and Troy. He also asked North Troy firefighters to be on standby.
NEWPORT CITY – For some, there’s nothing better than homemade food. Friday, Allison Hooper, co-founder of Vermont Butter and Cheese Creamery of Websterville, VT, prepared dishes using recipes from her book "In a Cheese Maker’s Kitchen" at Newport Natural Foods Marketing Café.
The dishes Hooper prepared include Mascarpone and Spanish dip and salad with a special goat cheese called bijou. She used cheeses made by her company. Community members also sampled the cheeses by themselves.
December 6th
NEWPORT - The Orleans County Sheriff's Department will have a new home soon - before the New Year if everything goes as planned.
Currently the department is located in an old house behind the court building. The house is falling apart, has mold due to frequent flooding in the basement, and has multiple structural problems.
A space on the second floor, which was being used, began to cave in, forcing employees out of the room.
The foundation is collapsing and there are several holes in it.
"You cannot conduct business in this house," Sheriff Kirk Martin said.
NEWPORT CITY – A Main Street storefront may soon be filled.
Albert and Eleanor LĂ©ger, co-proprietors of Eden Ice Cider Company, want to move their West Charleston company to the site of the former Downtown and Affordable Furniture.
The move would allow the company to develop the Northeast Kingdom Tasting Center to support local food enterprises.
On Monday, the Newport City Council gave its support to the Tasting Center to apply for a planning grant from the Vermont Community Development Program.
ORLEANS/ESSEX COUNTIES - The United States Post Office has announced far-reaching new plans to streamline services to save millions of dollars and try to stay solvent. Among these changes are the termination of overnight delivery.
There has been talk of suspending Saturday delivery and window and lobby services. Nationwide, post offices will be closed along with some distribution centers. Here in Vermont, there is talk of moving part of the distribution center at White River Junction to Burlington.

LOWELL, VT - Seven people were arrested on Lowell Mountain Monday morning including a local newspaper publisher, a doctor and a college professor.
A group of protesters opposed to the construction of 21 industrial wind turbines on Lowell Mountain planned the civil disobedience event Monday morning. The group of approximately 11 gathered on the crane path on the ridge line and stopped construction vehicles from advancing to their work sites. The land that protesters stood on is disputed property.
NEWPORT CITY – Last Thursday, about two dozen Newport area residents met at the Emory State Office Building to discuss community needs. Similar meetings have taken place elsewhere in the state. Eventually members of the groups will bring their message to the State House.
Put People First, part of the Vermont Workers' Center, organized Thursday’s meeting. Members are particularly concerned about what will happen to public assistance programs. They also feel everyone has a right to housing, education and dignified work.
