DERBY, VT - Flames shoot out of the engine of this 2000 Buick LeSabre parked at Lo's Tavern in Derby Thursday.
Firefighters responded to the scene at around 1:30 p.m. The fire started in the engine compartment and appeared to be electrical in origin.
William Park of Delanson, New York, owns the vehicle.
BRIGHTON, VT - Mark Podgwaite, Director of Lyndon Rescue, proposed a new emergency medical services contract to the Brighton Selectboard on Wednesday, one that did not contain any increase based on a fee for using a repeater on a tower owned by Sen. Vince Illuzzi and his brother Joseph Illuzzi, who own Site Acquisitions, LLC, based in Montpelier.
The contract did nothing to calm the dispute between Lyndon Rescue and the Illuzzi brothers over who pays how much for using the tower, however.
NEWPORT, VT - A hearing for a preliminary injunction was held Thursday in Orleans Superior Court in the matter of Green Mountain Power (GMP) versus Don and Shirley Nelson. Not all the evidence was presented and the court will continue the hearing Tuesday morning.
In the meantime, the court ordered that the Temporary Restraining Order, issued against the Nelsons and against others camping on the land in an attempt to interfere with construction of the Lowell Wind Project, remain in place pending the outcome of the hearing.

LOWELL, VT - The law firm of Hershenson, Carter, Scott and McGee, P.C., of Norwich, VT, has plunged into the Lowell Mountain wind project fray. The firm entered its appearance on behalf of Donald and Shirley Nelson, defendants in an Emergency Restraining Order petition filed by Green Mountain Power.
On behalf of its clients, the firm filed a Defendant's Emergency Motion to Dissolve TRO (temporary restraining order) and Request for Expedited Hearing on the Emergency Basis, an Answer to Plaintiff's (GMP's) Complaint, and has prepared a counterclaim.
NEWPORT, VT - When Sarah Hardin was hired as a physical therapist at North Country Hospital, she knew she’d landed a great job, but little did she know that being hired would send her on a direct course to meet her future husband, Chad Hardin. But that is just what happened.
For that matter, she helped orient him to the hospital when he arrived.
Although Chad no longer works at North Country, Sarah and Chad’s love lives on.
“He is the love of my life,” Sarah told her colleagues at North Country’s 25th Annual Awards Banquet held at the Elks Lodge in Derby on October 15.
DERBY LINE – On a warm day last month, Dave and Kelley Robinson were one of a handful of old car enthusiasts who went on a cruise throughout the state. As they entered the Hartford area, the Robinsons saw the devastation caused by Tropical Storm Irene, which had hit the region a week earlier. A little further in town, the couple saw young children searching the fields for their lost toys.Â
“That hurt,” said Dave Robinson. “It reminded me of things back in the 1950s. A lot of kids grew up around here with nothing.”

DERBY - There was standing room only at the Derby Select Board meeting Monday night, with people overflowing into the hallway. The hot topic of the night was the new adult novelty store on US 5 in Derby.
Rick Dubois, a trustee for the Village of Derby Center, said those present want a bylaw amendment that would not allow a novelty shop, adult book store, adult video, adult entertainment, etc., and would restrict such enterprises to Derby’s industrial zone.
LOWELL – Lowell wind project opponents gathered on Lowell Mountain Tuesday, all day, to show their disapproval of the wind project now under construction.
Blasting occurred at approximately 12:30, but it was on the other side of the ridge, far from the protesters.
Opponents reported that signs were being posted in the area to prevent them from getting to close to the blasting zone.
NEWPORT, VT - Co-defendants Christopher Lakin and Ty Morrison Jr. entered not guilty pleas at their arraignments in Newport on Oct. 18th. Both are being held on outstanding warrants and on bail of $50,000 each.
Lakin pleaded not guilty to four counts of burglary, possession of burglary tools, careless or negligent driving, driving on a suspended license, and attempting to elude a police officer. In related matters, Morrison plead innocent to four counts of burglary and one count of possession of burglary tools.
ISLAND POND - A 15,000 square foot building located on 1.99 acres on Meadow Street in Island Pond has been offered to the Town of Brighton free of charge.
At the last Brighton Select Board meeting two weeks ago, the board began researching the cost to maintain the building.
Joel Cope, town administrative assistant, said, "We collect $10,000 in taxes on it a year."
A recent tax bill shows only about $2767 of that amount is received by the town in municipal taxes, while $7267 is paid in non-residential education tax.
